Author has written 1 story for Misc. Books. I am a professional trainer and teach people about questioning techniques. I live in Sydney and help business people learn more about customer service and communication within the workplace. For Example: How many of you have been at a meeting where in the end, the chief says any questions? And there are no questions, and everybody shuffles off in question and however you may have had a question about why things are the way they are, how you could change them, or what if you tried something entirely different than what is happening, what may happen? There are a lot of occasions when we do not ask questions and business innovators, they are good at doing it. They won't sit back. They’re prepared to challenge the status quo. And what we find is that innovation is more likely to happen when individuals take the initiative to ask the questions and if leaders take the opportunity to make a secure space for others to ask the questions. So, questioning is really at the start of the innovation process because if you do not question the status quo, why do you change anything? Right, it begins with questioning and challenging the status quo. Excellent questions frequently really eliminate limitations from the thinking. So, Steve Jobs was known to like to ask this question. What if money were not any object? Technology were no object, what sort of merchandise would we create? In other words, he is asking what’s the ideal item, right. Now I know for me personally, I've gone from disc man to the iPod when I run, and it is a jump forward but if I had been really thinking about what the ideal item is, I’d like to be able to only speak the song I wish to hear and hear it in stereo sound everywhere I am at. That’s the way you remove constraints to attempt to get to what the ideal product is and then you may need to back off because cash and technology are actual issues, but excellent questions frequently are those that impose and remove constraints in your thinking. So how can you become a better questioner? One of what we recommend, a technique that we've developed is what we call question storming and we have all heard about brain storming, right? But brain storming is all about getting together with a group and you brain storm answers to a problem. So, learn how to question storm, do it individually but do it on your teams. That can help you become a better questioner. |
