Author has written 2 stories for Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Those that do, write. Those that don't, review.I try to give constructive criticism in reviews (none of that U SUK!! U SUK!! crap from me) and I also have quite an attachment to Harry Potter canon. I get a bit snarky if a major event, a severe character change or a gross misuse of the timeline is perpetrated in a fic. A few points to consider: - If you are a fan, then you should take the time to make sure your sources are correct. If you're not sure about the spelling of a name or place – look it up. - If you want to make a character act grossly different to how they do in the books, justify it. Make sure you spend time developing why they are changing and backing it up with evidence. Don't just suddenly say, "Over the summer Hermione got all depressed and decided to be a punk, shunning her parents, her friends and her wizarding lifestyle". Something must have happened to warrant such a reaction, give the reader something to believe in. - You can't go wrong with sketching out a quick outline for the story you want to write. Planning ahead is good so you know where you are taking it. Some stories (especially one-shots) can be developed fine without a guide, but for the longer ones (in my experience) it is essential. - Do not under-estimate the power of spell check. It's there for a reason. - Do NOT, under any circumstances, use netspeak in your stories. It only makes people look down on you. I don't usually write fan fiction, I do enjoy reading it though. There is a lot out there, both good and bad. I have written two short humour fics that were the result of overdosing on too much bad fic. I hope you like them. |
