Hello everyone. I feel like it's one of my responsibilities as an Internet user capable to reaching out to hundreds of people to inform and teach you about the most recent danger to the Internet and your very liberties. I'm sure that if you have been using the internet recently you have heard about SOPA and PIPA. If not then read carefully, because these two pieces of legislation can and will change your life if they are successfully passed. SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act and PIPA, the Protect IP act, are aimed at stopping the widespread amount of pirated content, copyrighted by corporations. Under this bill, it gives corporations an almost UNLIMITED amount of power to take down any website for "infringing on copyrights" This completely undermines the Safe Harbor Rule that holds only the user responsible, not the website. But under this bill, any site that hosts any type of copyrighted material, songs, pictures, music, movies and anything else, will be struck down and blocked from the web entirely. However, this bill is not going to even be able to accomplish their goal of stopping piracy. The only way to stop pirates is to create a service that is better and more convenient than the services offered by pirates. A pirate can just create a new URL to continue their illicit activities, completely overriding anything that is meant to deter their business that would be DNS blocked by SOPA and PIPA. So, what does this mean for you guys? SOPA and PIPA does not only affect America. You have to keep in mind that much of Internet's big corporations that control the internet are in the states. They would be under fire, and then you would suffer in turn. For example, Fanfiction, the very site you are using to read this right now, could easily be struck down and DNS blocked. ALL, if no most, of the material come from copyrighted material! That means, these corporations could come in and strike down every story, every article and every thing here. And what makes it even scarier, is that they can do so without almost any opposition or due process of the law. Let's take a REAL WORLD situation that just happened recently. Universal Music branded MegaUpload as a PIRATE website, and on the 29th of November, MegaUpload was unavailable to many countries around the world because of a DNS block. It was labeled a "rouge site", and even the law enforcement got involved. Now what happened next? Artists such as Kanye West and others created a song in support of MegaUpload on YouTube to raise awareness of SOPA and PIPA. What happened? YouTube was forced to take it down because Universal Music CLAIMED that it had violated copyrights! And the worst part is was that there was absolutely nothing to prove that it had. They owned NOTHING! This was obvious CENSORSHIP! So, this means that these big corporations are working to try to stop people from hearing the truth. And again this should scare the crap out of you. These corporations have to ability NOW already to take things down they deem "infringement" that they DON'T EVEN OWN! Now why did they do this? Because of competition. Corporations have targeted the internet because it creates competition. By passing SOPA and PIPA, they could DNS block ANY website. And they don't even have to be infringing copyright. If there is a possibility of the site infringing on copyrights, the corporations can SHUT THEM DOWN ENTIRELY. The amount of power that will be given to these companies could be used to take down anything they feel like is a danger to them. Another example, under PIPA, if a criminal had funds in a bank from illegal goods by selling them on the Internet, a company could SHUTDOWN the ENTIRE bank and its branches WITHOUT WARRANT OR DUE PROCESS OR NOTICE. That is how far these companies can go. So back to what this means for you. Everything changes if this bill passes. Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, DeviantART, Photobucket could easily be taken down. And this "infringement" isn't just music and video. If, for example, I linked you all to an article. That article is copyrighted, and I could be blocked and sent to jail for "violating" copyright. My Stories and ANY other you enjoy here would be gone. Everything you enjoy here on the internet would disappear forever. And what's worse, it won't be just me. It would be ALL of the website for just ONE "violation". And to make matters worse, the people in the congress who support this bill DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT AND HOW TO USE THE INTERNET. They refer to people who use the internet as "Internet Nerds." They barely even know how to use a keyboard! This was all recorded also, you can easily look it up...for now. And to the central idea of this bill. This bill is about CENSORSHIP, a violation of the freedom of speech. What else is this about? Corporate elimination of competition. Another example, if YouTube were shut down, various start-up companies wouldn't receive any media to gain funds and support. Some of these start-up companies could revolutionize the world, but with SOPA & PIPA in place, they would never ever to heard again. What happens then? The big corporations become richer because no competition is in place to take away sales BECAUSE there is no more medium to advertise them. Even some big corporations stated if these rules are put down, they wouldn't fund small start-ups unless it guarantees a 13X - 14X times profit! So any future small ventures and inventions could disappear. These bills will kill the economy, freedom and innovation of the future! This is not a small special ops mission to take out small violations. It's a bomb; it's a wipe; it's a full out nuclear strike on our freedoms and internet. So stand up and fight this bill! What can you guys do? Spread the word! Contact your congressman! And help stop these two bills that could forever destroy the internet! Support the fight to stop SOPA and PIPA!
