I write stories, and I like to think that narrative is a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil. I hope I'm using it right then.

The Power of A Sidekick: Young Justice, largely canonical. From my frustrations at the lack of development of the side heroes, and inspired by reading Rocket's backstory on Wikipedia, I wrote my very first fanfiction. (You can tell by the stupid title.) The odd friendship of two characters you barely saw on screen - Rocket/Raquel Erwin and Robin II/Jason Todd.

The Guardian Games: The Odds of Five: Rise of the Brave Tangled Frozen Dragons/ Hunger Games AU. This story came about due to my dissatisfaction with the available Hunger Games AU stories for this fandom. It always came with a couple of flaws: 1) Negligence of Canon-ity and its characters (especially side characters like parents, siblings; 2) Taking the POV of only one character, and not developing the other three (for Big Four fics)/ other four (for Big Five fics); 3) Following the THG film/book too closely, to the point there's not much difference. I do think it has worked out, but why don't you judge for yourself? It is my popular story yet, so perhaps it's not too awful.

So, if you want a Hunger Games story with (I think) interesting character interaction and development and references back to the original Five films of ROTBFD, (I can't make any promises on the action scenes), this is for you.

The Guardian Games: The Wrath of Five: Rise of the Brave Tangled Frozen Dragons/ Hunger Games: Mockingjay AU. Sequel to The Odds of Five, it will hopefully be the culmination of crazy plot twists, politics, war, love, trauma, hope and idealism. I have high hopes for this guy.

The Once and Future King: A BBC's Merlin AU. HTTYDxROTGxFrozen and some ROTBTFD. Where Jack takes Merlin's place as a cocky, impulsive, secretly magic-wielding servant to his sarcastic, droll Prince, none other than Hiccup, who apparently a great destiny to fulfil. Whereas 'The Odds of Five' is all suspense and heartache, this one is supposed to be humorous. Of course, I do have terrifying dark plans for this story direction, which gives it almost a 'Games of Thrones' feel - minus all the M-rated content. This is supposed to be family-friendly - like Merlin! (Well, somewhat.)

Don't Think About Elephants: An Inception AU. FrozenxROTGxTangled and slight ROTBTFD, but not extensively. Probably the weirdest AU I have conceived. I'm not an exclusive Jelsa shipper (readers of The Odds of Five can attest frustratedly to that), but I was pretty impressed by some of SaturnXK's angsty Jelsa stories. I'm not really fond of fluffy Jelsa - but angsty/antagonistic Jelsa? That's interesting. In a way, it can be said that much of this story will literally be a discussion why Jelsa would or wouldn't work (that would be my opinion, of course. Another part that I thought would be especially hard, yet interesting, to tackle would be Anna's relationship with Jack in the Jelsa fandom. I've read stories where Elsa completely prioritizes Jack over Anna (what?!?), and they offend me, and strangely enough, I decided to write a story based on that. So basically, behind the mumbo-jumbo dream jargons and the complicated plot line, the story boils down to this; who knows Elsa better - Anna or Jack?

More than a Bird, More than a Plane: A Superhero AU. ROTBTFD and LOTS of Disney Dreamworks. Unlike the other AUs, this one is based not on a particular film or franchise, but many, many different sources. The world of the story takes place in a smashed together, semi-canonical universe where Megamind, The Incredibles and Big Hero 6 all happened chronologically in a fictional country of Ameripan (American Japan. Thank you BH6). It focuses on a bunch of emerging (mostly) teen heroes (the ROTBTFD) in a world where there's no clear good or evil. The criminal are not quite villains and the good guys aren't always right, so our folks here would be struggling with their gifts as they sort all this out. Staring Anna as Louis Lane, Kristoff as a grouchy Jimmy Olsen, Jack Frost as not-quite Superman, Hiccup as Spider-Man-with-dragon, Merida as Nightcrawling-Arrow, Rapunzel as Green Lantern-without-ring-plus-hair, and Elsa as a hopefully good version of Talia Al Ghul.

Hiatus-ed

The Mercy Protocol: Heart's Desire: Young Justice, canonical, post-Invasion but non-Apokolips. Started in the time I was still high on Superhero stuff, my interest waned simply because of me being a stubborn fool, I created a story that involved almost every single ayah character, and as a result, I'm forced to work to often with characters that I don't like. This story became a burden, but yet I don't have the heart to abandon it completely. The storyline is still stuck in my head, but I don't know if I'll have patience to write it properly,

Comics vs Fanfiction

The thing I love about this website, and other fanfiction ones, is how close its nature is to that of comics.

For example, in the olden days and even in still now, comics are published by issue, one after another. There may be comics which have each comic holding a mini adventure of its own, or those which are simply links to a much larger story chain. Similarly, that how it works for the posting of stories in fanfiction.

Another similarity is the communication between author and reader. Comic book writers often received mail - some were fan-mail, others were complaints. Some publishers would even keep a column on the last page just for answering revie- ahem, letters. Much like that, fanfiction has lots of author-reader communication - except that with digital use being almost free, the letters have been more succinct.

Another I like about both comics (especially the superhero type) and fanfiction is how characters and world we love can placed in so many universes. Just as Superman has gone through so many incarnations, so many different versions and so many experimental deviations, characters of any fandom can be placed scenarios new or old, canonical or alternative.

The biggest difference between both is, well, the price. Ignoring the fact that fanfiction doesn't have illustration like comics, each issue of comic is more likely to have better quality of storytelling (where I refer to the process of communicating a narrative, regardless of medium) than a chapter in fanfiction, simply because comic writers are professionals, they're facing off huge competition and they are making you pay for it. That being said, that doesn't mean there can't be quality in fanfiction either. For one, fanfiction writers are usually driven by their passion in wiring. Rapid communication between reader and writer also makes the appreciation of their work experienced more quickly, which can in turn spur more effort and efficiency in story craft. The freeing thing about fanfiction is that you can really write anything you like, for as long as you like. Comic publishing, which is essentially a commercial endeavor, still has to change according to market trends, critic reception and profit margins.

I will always love those glossy colored pages and the gorgeous artwork from talented comic writers. At the same time though, I enjoy the trivial stories that one can dig in fanfiction for a good laugh, or cheesy romance that only I and few others ship, or the astonishing, brow-raising alternate universe no one had ever thought of, or even those grand epics so good that you wonder why they're writing for free.

In the end, it's truly the mastery of storytelling that I'm looking for, whether it comes by my own hand or another.

These are my own personal rules on what of a true fanfiction is:

1) It cannot be removed from context.

What this means is that a story written for a particular fandom cannot be revamped to become its own stand alone story or tweaked to fit another fandom exactly. This does not mean that certain crossovers can never happen, or that one type of universe cannot be applied to two different fandoms.

Let me try to make this clearer with an example: Let's say that you write two fanfictions in Modern Zombie AU - one for the Lord of the Rings fandom, and one for the Star Wars fandom. If you do this right, people would be able to read both stories and still get something exclusive to each story. Like maybe for the LOTR one, the One Ring could be a device that draws zombies towards you and yet has a seductive quality that makes it impossible for the bearer to let it go. On the other hand, the Star War could possibly be having the remaining human community deciding if they should abide by the Sith or the Jedi in their battle against the unnaturally dead. Interactions between characters should be such that you can't mistake the characters for anyone else - like a dialogue between Frodo and Sam about killing zombies should be vastly different from one between Han Solo and Luke. If you do it well enough, changing all the names of the characters and the places would make your story lose a touch of its magic. Why? Because...

2) Any Fanfiction should strive to be a tribute to the source material as much as possible

This one is seriously tricky, but if you can't manage it well, you might want to try writing your own original universes on fictionpress instead.

But you can't say it's wrong. Fanfiction is meant to be a tribute. That's why people get mad when their favorite characters are dragged through OCC land without good explanation, or when the story written is too close to the/a original. (Not pointing any fingers, but I did read a fanfiction of How To Train Your Dragon written in a Harry Potter AU, but it was so similar to the Harry Potter book that I was subconsciously reading 'Harry' instead of 'Hiccup'. It's a no-no in my rule book .) A tribute should at least ensure that characters are portrayed in an accurate manner, or at least the changes in their behavior justified and explained. This doesn't mean that you can't make try to make Emperor Palpatine a Jedi, but you have to tell it in the right way to make it believable.

These are my two main rules for fanfiction writing. If you break one, I might still read it, but I doubt it's going on favorites list. I didn't talk about grammar and spelling, because that's usually a given (not to say that I'm not a criminal myself, but it is the basics of the medium.)

Evil Elsas

I have this weird thing for 'evil Elsa' - well, not really so much as 'evil' as 'highly misunderstood' and 'driven to darkness' Elsa. Perhaps it seems with my love for the original fairytale 'The Snow Queen', and also because I fell in love with the first drafts of Elsa being the bad guy. I think she would have a really interesting villain - perhaps it's no wonder, then, that I enjoy writing her on the dark-side. Strangely though, I don't actually enjoy reading 'evil Elsa' fics, or perhaps I have yet to find a good one. Hmm.

In Defense of the White Peacock (or why I put KFP 2’s Shen as a big villain in The Odds of Five)

This section is simply for anyone who’s wondering why I’m giving this strange character called ‘Shen’ a fairly important role in the story 'The Guardian Games: The Odds of Five', especially since it's an ROBTFG FF, and that I haven’t brought in any other character from the Kung Fu Panda 2. I’m not sure if I mentioned it before, but I’ll say it again. Shen is my favorite Dreamworks villain. Ever.

Sorry Pitch. (But if you’ve never read the RoTG books, there’s no way you can say that Pitch’s backstory is even as strong as Shen. The movie never developed him enough.)

Shen is a tragic villain. Oh yes, he’s ruthless, ambitious and even sadistically insane at some points, but that he also carries great emotional burdens, like his resentment towards his parents, and his fear of his predicted destiny, which leads him into a cycle of self-destruction that hurts both the innocent and those who care about him. A prisoner of his own turmoil and a victim of his own evil, it hard for me not to like this guy.

Oh, if you haven’t watched KFP 2, I highly recommended it. Even if you’re not the biggest fan of Po and The Furious Five (I like them, but a fan of them? Not really), you should just watch for Shen, because he’s wonderful.
