Author has written 1 story for Fairy Tales. Hi, my name's not really Wilhemina, I'd truly hate to have that name, but it's in honor of Bram Stoker's Dracula and one of his main characters. I love that book, but I hate how they spend the ENTIRE book trying to figure out how to kill Dracula, and then he's dead in like, two paragraphs. Otherwise it's amazing. Do read it, it's not scary at all. As an author, and avid reader of books and fanfics, I love good plot lines, well written stories, and PROPER mechanics. One of the most annoying things a fellow author can do is to not spell names and places correctly, not use spell check or grammar check, USE CAPITAL LETTERS TO SHOW SHOUTING, use extra exclamation points, not use commas ever or use them incorrectly, not use proper punctuation in general, and to use the same wording; i.e. she said, 'hello.' he said, 'hello.' she then went to the bathroom. she also got out her hair brush. she then brushed her hair. she got in the bath tub. she got out. she did this. she did that. This becomes very annoying - to the extent where I refuse to read their story, leave any review, and refuse to even look at any of their other stories, regardless of how interesting the plot may be. Another thing that gets on my nerves is when you look forward to a good-sized chapter. Then, you scroll down and find out that half of the chapter is mindless responses to reviews that mean nothing to you. You know, when they say, 'oh yeah, what you said was hilarious and i totally agree with you,' then they blab on for a good five to seven sentences with nothing intelligible. Yes, so do not do that, it ruins the story. Those sorts of things are for the back covers of paperbacks and hardcover books, not fanfics. One other serious offence is OOC, out of character, to the extent where it is no longer the character, it is just someone with the same name. Really, as much as we want to turn the goody-two-shoes into Gothic freaks, and the bad boys into sweet lovers, it doesn't work that way. An author makes their character a certain way because that's who the character is. Really, what if one day you suddenly became someone you weren't? How would your friends react? It's the same thing. People don't go through extreme personality changes for no reason. Now, if you have flashbacks showing the past and the slowly changing personality, that would work. But now just say, 'oh, she got sick and tired of how people treated her, so she became Gothic,' and then just go on with your story! That says nothing for the character. Slight OOC-ness is exceptional, as long as it's believable. Alternate Universes (AU fics) are also annoying. Really, do you believe that (using Harry Potter as an example) Dumbledore would send seventh years to muggle high school just for a project? It hasn't happened in the real series, so why do you think it would happen here? I'm not saying that you shouldn't enjoy writing your own versions, but that's like blasphemy to me. To take a perfectly good series of books, and destroy them? That is precisely what you are doing! Instead, try and think what J.K. Rowling would write, or whoever the author is, and then try and make it seem like it was possible. However, I have nothing against time-travel ones or where they go on a trip to another country, so long as the facts are right! If you're going to send a character to the 16th century, then do a little research and understand the customs so that you can show how difficult it might be for the character to be there. Or if it's to another country, Italy for example, make sure that you know something about Italy, maybe even choose a smaller city and have that be the place that they go. Rather than the stereotypical Rome, Milan, Venice, etc. When you write a story, the worst thing you can do is change how it is written. Harry Potter was written by an English woman and was written how she spoke. The characters spoke like they were from England. You can't have someone from England, who has always lived in England, suddenly start talking like a gangster! Or someone from Italy talking like their from Texas! As hard as it may be to change how you write, due to how you talk, try and imagine in your head the sound of an English accent and have them speak the words for you. Read books like Pride and Prejudice and other very English books. They will help you in trying to achieve a pseudo-English accent in your story. If your characters are from another day and age, than try and incorporate some of that voice and tone that they would use in that time period. Do not overdo it, though. There's almost nothing worse than having someone write "and wherefore art thou Jonathan whost I own to him that which I hold dearest to my own heart." Truly, almost no one can understand that when they read it the first time. It's not worth it, so just cut the crap and use the words properly. Please, when you write your stories, refrain from using AIM or MSN speech. You know, writing, 'ttyl' in the middle of the dialect, just because you're far too lazy to write it all out. Don't even use it in the other parts of the story, it ruins the whole feel of the story. Your reader will suddenly go from 'into it' to not believing it's a story. Now, a little bit about myself: I love to read, I love to write, I love music, I love computers (especially the internet), and I love art. I would, and could, talk for hours on these subjects, my friends know that. If you have any book suggestions please tell me. Though I warn you, I am not fond of teenage girls' books, I need and want something challenging, and can read adult books with ease. But if you can find something that works within these preferences, please tell me. Right, so I haven't updated for about two years and I got rid of my HP fanfic (finally!). There have been tons of ideas floating around in my head forcing me to write them down so I've decided that I'll start compiling one-shots with my own characters and unique (hopefully) plotlines. If you'd like me to continue a story then I'll see what I can do. Please, however, do not tell me what I should write. If anything, that'll just piss me off and I'll never look at the story again. Enjoy. |
