It's always been Fíli and Kíli, never Fíli or Kíli, but some unwanted visitors arrive outside Ered Luin the day before Fíli's 70th birthday and change all that, changing their lives in a way they never thought possible. - Rating possibly MA for torture (will specify chapters where torture will occur so you can skip if uncomfortable.)

In Goblin Town, Thorin offers himself in Kili's place to protect his nephew from torture. It was well known to the company that Kíli and Fíli were mischievous little terrors as dwarf children. Sitting around various campfires on the way to reclaim Erebor, the pair's youthful adventures and scrapes are exposed to the group, including broken bones, earthquakes, dwarf pox and plenty of h/c. Kíli/Fíli with protective!Thorin and the rest of the dwarves thrown in for fun.

Fíli and Kíli get in a fight, and Fíli stomps off on his own... but when he doesn't return, it's up to Kíli to find him. But something has happened to Fíli, and he no longer seems to be the brother Kíli knows. No slash.

Thorin recalls memories of his sister-sons and has to face the consequences of bringing his only living family with him on the quest to reclaim Erebor. Will be spoilers if you haven't read the end of The Hobbit.
