![]() Author has written 11 stories for Hogan's Heroes. I love reading and writing fanfiction! After deactivating my account for a while, I recently re-posted eight of my stories. My PM messaging is often shut off, but I am able to turn it on to respond to reviews about once a week. I love to get reviews and feedback. I also republish my stories at AO3, and I publish slash there too (but not here.) In most of my stories, Newkirk has the stutter he has on the German version of the show. This gives me something different to explore in the canon character. Some of the frustration and irritation that we see in his personality fits in with his feelings about his stutter. Please note that the stutter IS canon in the German version of Hogan’s Heroes but it's never really explored because it's just dubbed in for laughs. So I’m looking at it more seriously and really exploring it. And if you're wondering, I stutter too, like 70 million people in the world do. A fanfiction writer asked me recently why I chose to include the stutter in my stories since it's only on the German version. The answer is because it's real to me. So I might as well acknowledge it. Today, doctors know that stutters have a neurological basis. And it can run in families. My mom used to stutter when she grew up. She stopped when she immigrated to the US at age 12 and learned English. My youngest brother stutters too, much more than I do. Stutters are not caused by being anxious or nervous or shy. But having a stutter can cause anxiety and nervousness, making the stutter worse. Being abused can definitely worsen it. They didn't know this in the 1940s so they tended to think it was the nervousness that caused the stutter and to treat people like they just needed to calm down. In my stories, Newkirk is teaching Hogan and the rest of the team not to underestimate him just because he stutters. He's brave and smart and very outgoing. He just stutters. It just IS. The bad things that happened in Newkirk's past, and the low-level bullying that every person who stutters lives with, do drag him down and make him vulnerable. But being supported and valued by his friends lifts him back up. I hope you enjoy these stories. |
