Why Gmail is better than internal email servers

There is a lot of misinformation out there about information technology and we can't really blame people about it. Most people just know how to use information technology but don't understand how it works, which results in misunderstandings. Those of us who do know how things work may sigh and lament the lack of knowledge among the people, but we'd be wrong – because we treat other things the same way as most people treat information technology.
A great example of this is a car. Most adults have driven a car, or at the very least ridden in one. Cars have been all around us ever since we were born. Yet, do most people understand cars? If you were to stop people randomly on the street and ask them what is traction or how a combustion engine works, how many people would be able to answer? Very few.
People who don't understand how technology works and end up thinking that internal email servers will be better than Gmail. Here's why they think that way and why they are wrong.
Why people think Internal Email Servers are safer
People think internal email servers are safer because they think of email like any other product. Usually, anything you get custom made is high quality while anything you buy from a mass manufacturer is a bit lower in quality. People talk about how craft beers from micro breweries are better than the big name brands, people know that getting a suit made from a tailor is much better (and more expensive) than just buying a suit from a retailer. This perception has led people into believing that anything that is made to order is high quality while anything that is mass produced is low in quality. Since Gmail is from Google and anyone can use it, people think that it may not be very good and setting up their own email server will end up being more secure and provide better services. The reality couldn't be further from this.
What makes Gmail so secure

There are a lot of factors in play when it comes to security. The first is the expertise of the people in charge of security. The second is experience in dealing with threats. The third is the sophistication of the security technologies being used. Another important factor is the amount of vigilance and the number of people overseeing security. Gmail is better in all these aspects than an internal email server. This will make perfect sense once we delve into the details:
Expert security team
Suppose that you work in an organization that has 1000 employees. Google, at last count, had over 57,000 employees and has billions of dollars. Which one of these do you think will be able to hire the real security experts? Would a small company be able to hire the people with the best hacking knowledge in the world, or would it will be easier for Google to do so? Simply put, Google can easily afford to hire the world's most competent people. Their security team consists of some of the leaders of information security and many of them have experience with black-hat exploits as well.
Sophistication of Security
Let's go back again to how big Google is. Google is one of the most valuable companies on planet earth. Their whole business is in the world of information technology and information security is vital to them. Their business depends on them not being hacked or taken down. Google can afford to buy and deploy more security measures than any other company. They use the latest technologies and no one is quicker at closing exploits than the Gmail team.
Vigilance
Google has people who are monitoring its security 24/7. There are hundreds of people whose only job is to ensure that Google's network is secure. Think about that – there are probably more people working at Gmail to keep their data secure than there are total number of people working in your company. Which of these would you trust with your data more? A server being maintained by a few people that isn't even physically secure or the world's most sophisticated technology combined with a vigilant team of experts? It seems clear that Gmail is the better choice here as well.
Why Gmail is plain better
The problem with using an internal email server is that it is a pain to access your email anywhere else unless you pay extra to have a webmail client built as well. Otherwise your email will continue to be locked inside your work computer and your phone. Gmail can be accessed from any browser from anywhere in the world. Gmail is also much better to use than most internal email services. It has a great user interface.
Gmail is also better because of the features in it. Internal email servers have very basic features. Their junk mail detection is junk. They don't really let you use plugins or add-ons. Gmail has all these and much more. It has one of the best spam filters on the internet. It has great features for organizing your data using folders, filters, and labels. It has a large amount of storage which becomes even larger if you pay for a business account.
Another huge advantage is that using Gmail makes it easy for your employees to access the other important Google tools as well. Applications like Google Drive and Google Docs can be major time savers. They also come in handy when you're stuck somewhere without the right software installed on your system. Gmail for business isn't just about email; it is about a suite of productivity software that helps your employees work better than ever before. If you are using Gmail, you don't have to worry about being hacked or about someone leaking your emails – the data is so secure that it is pretty much impossible to do so. To date, there has never been a security breach at Gmail and it is unlikely that one will happen any time soon.
