A long time ago, I thought of a writing challenge, called Challenge of the Heart, where you take your favorite pairing, separate the characters and pair them up with different people. The idea was that, if you really loved the characters enough, you could try putting them into different pairings and writing them out, perhaps even finding a new pairing to love. Now, I'm finally spreading the word on this challenge. CotH is something that should be fun and invigorating for any avid fanatic of any fandom, from Pokemon to Harry Potter to Bleach to who knows what else! There are no restrictions or rules for this, other than the guideline that you're writing two new pairings from the separation of your favorite couple. So, go nuts! Awards I've Received Legendary Muses Forums 2010 Awards Night I was nominated for "Best Overall Writer" oQo I really need to keep better track of my profile here. *ahem* oQo Categories I currently love to write for: Avengers/Marvel (movie canon) Categories I currently love to read: Avengers/Marvel oQo Future Ideas Fire Emblem: Title: You are not alone Estimated Length: Long chaptered-fic (like, really guys, strap yourselves in for a long ride, it has about 60k words atm and I still have plenty of plot to make happen) Genre: Adventure, Friendship, Humor, Romance, Drama, etc. 'Verse: Awakening Characters: Maygen (OC), Lon'qu, M!Robin, Chrom, Basilio, Flavia, other OCs, etc. Summary: The Mad King has been defeated, and Ylisseans can finally relax. Or they would, if Robin wasn't so sure there was a bigger plot behind it all. And then he asks a favor of Maygen that will place her within the twenty-yard "no women" buffer zone around Lon'qu. Wasn't the adventure supposed to end with the war? Excerpt: "You want me to... train with him?" Nodding, Chrom beamed at her with a clap of the shoulder. "Lon'qu is a skilled warrior, but this one weakness threatens his everyday life. Sure, he can stomach it when adrenaline's pumping through his veins, but how's he going to get through dinner if he can't even ask a friend to pass the salt unless they're a man?" "You have a point..." Still, she wasn't sure how her presence was going to help, or at least anymore so than any other female Shepherd would. Seeing her doubt, Robin added logically, "It's a productive way to spend your time as we wait for the citizens of both countries to settle down and be willing to listen to well-meaning people like you. Helping him conquer this fear will in turn give him more options to help others--and after all of our struggling, I think we'll need all of the help we can get." Maygen sighed, adjusting her cloak. "You didn't need to tag-team to convince me," she muttered, gaze on their feet. "I'll do it, just... um, have you asked him about this?" The tactician grinned. "We were just on our way to do that. Care to join?" "Um--what?" o Title: The Shepherd's Pie Estimated Length: Undetermined, collection of semi-related oneshots Genre: Humor, Friendship, Romance, Drama 'Verse: Awakening (Alternate Universe, modern) Characters: Chrom, F!Robin, Frederick, Lissa, etc. Summary: Waking up without your name is terrifying. Thankfully, good-hearted people were always willing to help others. Excerpt: Trying to get him to understand, her gesture to encompass how complete her amnesia was suddenly prompted the blonde to scream. The men jumped, the stranger faltered, and Frederick immediately stepped between them, shouting, "What is it, Lissa?" "Blood!" Something had been trickling down her neck for the past minute, but she had placed it on the bottom of her list of priorities until that word had brought it to the fore. She glanced at the palm she had brought to her head and frowned at the red liquid smeared across it. "Oh," she said simply. That was when her legs decided to give out on her. o Title: Special Homeland Espionage and Protection (subject to change) Estimated Length: Long chaptered fic Genre: Action, Hurt/Comfort, Drama, Angst, Romance, etc. 'Verse: Awakening (Alternate Universe, modern, secret agent fic) Characters: Maygen (OC), Stahl, Frederick, Phila, Chrom, Lon'qu, Basilio, Aversa, Emmeryn, M!Robin, OCs, etc. Summary: In the bustling city of Ylisstol, crime is running rampant, and the international terrorist organization GRIMA has been plotting something nasty for years. It is up to the dead and the forgotten to defend the citizens, and the world, against such an elusive yet potent threat. Excerpt: "This must be important, if you're willing to part with someone so valuable even for a time." Phila gave a light squeeze before releasing Maygen's shoulder. "Of course. GRIMA is involved." A moment of silence was observed. Despite Frederick's training, she let the name summon tension into her fists. Gradually, Basilio turned in his seat to examine his own man. "So! What do you think? Up for the job?" The agents waited for his answer. His features weren't friendly, eyebrows furrowing as his lips drew up for a scowl. The reluctance was practically screaming for him to be dismissed. An unspoken message passed between the men. In the end, he gave a faint huff. "I follow your orders, sir." o Title: Gangrel the Ylissean (subject to change) Estimated Length: Long chaptered fic Genre: Adventure, Drama, Humor, Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, etc. 'Verse: Awakening (semi-related to fics "husk" and "How Prides Goes") Characters: Gangrel, Gaius, Emmeryn, Chrom, Lissa, OCs, etc. Summary: After war has decimated both nations, young Gangrel decides to hop the border into Ylissean lands and see what havoc he can wreak as a petty thief. Growing up in a nation he despises, and surrounded by people he should hate as a result, the gods see fit to throw obstacles in his path--not the least of which is his own neglected conscience. Excerpt: N/A o Title: Oh, Brother Estimated Length: Long chaptered fic Genre: Humor, Friendship, Family, Hurt/Comfort, etc. 'Verse: Awakening (Alternate Universe, modern, college setting) Characters: Maygen (OC), Gangrel, Chrom, Aversa, F!Robin, etc. Summary: Going to college is bad enough, when you're not exactly the best student. It doesn't help when you have a guy like Gangrel as your dorm buddy. But he and Maygen go way back, so she's almost obligated. He could at least TRY not being an insufferable jerk, though. Excerpt: He grinned as he caught sight of someone entering the cafeteria. "There's my girlfriend. Beautiful woman. Curves in all the right places... do you see her--" His words became a gurgle. The brunette had grabbed his chin to force his head back, pretending to choke him so he'd stop talking. "Don't be crude, Gangrene," she muttered. The other women snickered as he forced her away with colorful insults. "Focus on your girlfriend's notes for a change, since you refuse to take any yourself." o Title: Feroxi High (subject to change) Estimated Length: Short chaptered fic Genre: Romance, Humor, Drama, Friendship, etc. 'Verse: Awakening (Alternate Universe, modern, high school setting) Characters: Mainly Feroxi OCs, Maygen (OC), Lon'qu, Olivia, Gregor, etc. Later Ylisseans and Plegians make an appearance. Summary: Senior year, and Zhent is prepared to coast on his good grades for a relaxing end to his pre-college education--no drama, whether it be from classwork or relationships. But then a girl transfers into Feroxi High, and his careful planning comes crashing down around him. His friends aren't any help, predictably. "For the last time, I'm not interested in her!" Excerpt: Sinking into his assigned seat in first period, [Zhent] couldn't help the relieved sigh that escaped him. Just one more year to go and he'd be through with high school, off to college and moving on with his life. These last two semesters were going to be different. One week in, a new student transferred to Feroxi High. o Pokemon: Title: Watch Me Disappear Estimated Length: 4-5 chapters Genre: Romance, Drama, generally emotionally- and inner-conflict-driven stuff (not exactly Angst, maybe Hurt/Comfort) 'Verse: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky Characters: Skuntank, Koffing, Zubat, Hero (Terris the turtwig), Partner (Gideon the cyndaquil), Grovyle, etc. Summary: Skuntank's point-of-view is turned inside-out after a chance meeting at Sharpedo Bluff. Excerpt: Suddenly, Skuntank felt out of the loop, and that was never a pleasant feeling for him. I want to know where these two have been . . . who this guy is . . . and why they’re hiding now. And then, I’ll expose them to the world! Who knew what nasty secrets these three could be hiding? Sneaking around town, probably stealing supplies and gossip from unsuspecting citizens . . . how ironically Skull-like. It had to be something juicy. Chaw to the haw-haw. o Title: (in progress) Estimated Length: 100 chapters minimum, 250 chapters maximum Genre: Humor, Friendship, Romance, etc. 'Verse: DPP Characters: Volkner, Dawn (female player), Flint, Arceus, etc. Summary: Using a god in battle would just be plain cheating. So, Dawn instead drops Arceus off at Volkner's to be babysat while she's doing Sinnoh Champion things. ZapPlateShipping, told in drabbles. Excerpt: N/A o Title: (in progress) Estimated Length: Around 100 chapters Genre: Humor, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, Drama, Adventure, Romance, etc. (in others words, I don't know yet) 'Verse: PMD Blue and Red Rescue Team Characters: Hero (Kitsune "Kitty" the umbreon), Partner (Sakura the venusaur), Absol (Blade), Gengar, Medicham, Ekans, etc. Summary: There was nothing in the world that could convince Blade that Team Meanies wasn't up to something, so he decided to keep an eye on things to protect his friends. Little did he know that someone was watching him in return. Not directly related to "Just to Satisfy." Excerpt: N/A o Title: (in progress) Estimated Length: 100 chapters minimum, 250 chapters maximum Genre: Humor, Adventure, Romance, Friendship, etc. 'Verse: PMD 2, Darkness/Time/Sky Characters: Weavile (Lady Weavile), Gallade (Rain), Arbok (Corvax), Drapion (Toxi), Roserade (Melody), Rhyperior (Bobby), etc. Summary: Sometimes, Rain really didn’t know what to do about Team AWD. They were a band of thieves, taking treasure and intimidating pokemon left and right. But then, there was Lady Weavile . . . AntiquityShipping, PMD2-style. Told in drabbles. Excerpt: N/A o The Guardians of Childhood/Rise of the Guardians: Title: into the abyss (part one of the Midnight trilogy) Estimated Length: 20 chapters maximum Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Drama, Humor, Friendship, Romance, etc. 'Verse: GoC/RotG-mix, set after movie Characters: Pitch Black, Man in the Moon, OC, etc. Summary: When Pitch finds that he DOES have at least one believer, he grabs at the opportunity with greedy hands. And so starts a series of life-changing events, for both the King of Nightmares and his reluctant follower. Written using LJ writing community challenge. Excerpt: “I am the King of Nightmares, in control of the darkest depths of humanity’s heart.” Growing larger with his rising fury, he spat, “I am Pitch Black, where no warm light may shine.” Her hand fumbled with the doorknob to her bedroom, sweaty palms interfering with her ability to turn it. “I. Am. The Boogeyman.” Shadows and sand from every corner of the room rose at his bidding, creating a looming mass of darkness that threatened to consume her. He narrowed his eyes. “I want to blacken your soul with fear, until you can only believe in me.” o Crossovers: N/A oQo Biography: I am a brown-eyed brunette and was born in Bethesda, Maryland from my sweet mother and caring father. Then me and my mother moved to Hawaii (my parents divorced when I was three), then Florida, then Nebraska, then Colorado, then New Mexico, and then Florida again. My father and his family (he remarried) have moved around quite a bit, too. I currently have two half-brothers and a stepsister. In fifth grade, I made a friend. He was weird. He was funny. So, in my book, he was cool. I talked to him during and after school, and we both discovered we loved Sonic, Pokemon, and multiple other things. It was weird, but cool at the same time. Then he told me about these funny things (like bloopers of sorts) about Sonic, and I loved it, and we decided to make our own. Eventually, we went on full throttle and made our own characters. (Shadowpaw was born in 2004, July 20th while I was at a youth group thing in church, so technically she's only a couple of years old) My love of writing grew in Florida, and I decided to write a story about it. And then, I made an account here after another friend of mine recommended it. I've been here ever since, and it's really quite a lively place. The story hits, the flames, the RPs, the beta-readers - this place has something for everyone! I also have an account on DeviantArt, under the name ShadowpawMFur, but I'm not as active there as I am on here. I tried to branch out and made a MediaMiner account, but I haven't been on it for a while. I went through my middle and high school years changing from a withdrawn, strange and quiet girl into a friendly, eccentric and silly young woman, and I graduated with my high school diploma on May 21st, 2011. It was the turning point of my life, walking away from the campus I had gone to almost daily for four years, and I currently am trying to live life to its fullest. After all, we only have one death, right? Might as well make the most of it! I was in college for a time, but funds and life-changing events have thrown me off my game; currently, I'm trying to muster up the motivation to finish a bloody novel and actually pursue my dream of being a published author. So! Have you lived today? oQo -Note: Feel free to Control-F this section, in case you want to see if we have similar interests. "Love life until you find something to love doing every day of your life." Well, when one uses paint, normally one gets covered in it. It's like the Universe is trying to make a joke, but it can't quite form the proper punchline. Love is friendship; friendship is love. These two things I know to be true, for the marriages that last are fostered on friendship, and the friends that last are those who grow to love each other. "Why is it smoking?" I had fun using the chicken wing as a puppet, though; tugging on certain muscles to make it wave at the vegetarian across the room. *slapped* Ohh, I'm so baaaad That's the problem with having a humongous country: You never get to go anywhere else. Inspiration is such a fickle beast. I wish I could tame it. "You are the very definition of a hero, I hope you know." "Love what is, don't hate what isn't." Why must you boil water to make iced tea? o.O Don't be hatin' like Satan. D: Anyway...welcome back, Will. Hopefully a new era amongst the LM forum has begun - where the past can be muffled into silence and make room for the future to explode with bright new lights and sounds. Oh, don't be so modest DL. If SU is the brain of the forum, you're undoubtedly the heart. why does everything i glomp leave me D: -Dies again in a painful way- D: Now you're smack-talking each other about weight? You two act more like teenage girls than the actual teenage girls here! (no offense) ...I'm an idiot. I kept refreshing and refreshing and refreshing the last page until I finally noticed: we're on page two. *mauled* “Well, in my humble eyes, you're comparable to Glory and Dusk. "I can't see a foot in front of my face." "My nose! What happened? The stink dissolved it off my face! (pauses) Hmm? Oh! Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. The cartoonist never gave me a nose." I'm not an actress, she thought, but not only am I onstage, I've completely forgotten my lines. No, I don't even know which play I'm in, and I walked onstage naked. I'm naked, I was prepared for a burlesque, and now I'm supposed to be performing kabuki and I have bronchitis. I'm naked, I have bronchitis, I'm supposed to sing opera and the yakuza are threatening to give my entire family concrete shoes if I don't bring in the crowds and give them the moneys. Even at this age, Sesshoumaru is unapproachable. It's like his personality cancels out his cuteness. 'I think you like her more than you did when you first met.' "She's talking about flowers, isn't she?" "Aha! The ionic defragulator!" "Ah, Green Hill Zone. We've had some good times here, haven't we, Tails?" “Sesshoumaru what is this?” "Hey, you tripped me!" "Do I look like a ball to you?!" "Oh, great. Mama always told me that one day I'd get trapped in an alien dimension without a change of clothes." "Oh, of all the lazy...Here I go to the trouble of waking that Dark Gaia thing up, and it causes me nothing but delays!" “I thought of you as so cold and remote when we first arrived. Now I find you easy to confide in.” “I knew you couldn’t resist me.” "Your skill at self-aggrandizement is unparalleled." "I know little girls who are better with a hammer than you. Well, one...anyway." "Whatever, you oversized letter opener." “Ah,” Giratina commented, “the power of yesterday sits heavily on the mind.” “I give up,” he finally relented as he pressed his back against the wall and sighed. “I have no idea who made this, but I wish I could shake his hand...before I ripped his arm from its socket.” "You're clean. Considerate. Well-spoken. You look at my face when I'm speaking to you." "With Kagome, trying to kill her seems to be the surest way of making friends." "Does Sesshoumaru-sama really need three swords?" she asked, confusion creasing her face. "Sesshoumaru-sama only has one hand." "Love takes courage." "What was that?" "Use whatever is at hand, be it friend or foe." "Everything seems stupid when it fails." "Ich bin... FUCKING ANGRY!" "Now let's see you clap! Hahaha!" "Look at all the body parts. Someone get me a bag!" "Ooh! This is much better than my Hitler Youth knife!" "Under what reich is that fair?" "There is probably one big switch somewhere that powers EVERYTHING. We Germans are very efficient." "Mother said I shouldn't play with dolls...or myself, but I don't always do what mother likes." "I have earned un achievement!...(like a little kid) yay." A burning skeleton! Damn, that's cool. "Can I have my pen back?" “I don’t understand why she won’t talk to me. Just because I’m popular and she isn’t doesn’t mean we can’t get along.” "Draco, come along. And don't look to your left, Greyback appears to be eating someone. We will talk about this at home." "The curse of the perpetual overachiever," he said, smirking, "is that when people discover that you can make miracles happen, they expect you to walk on water to bring them tea." ". . . Kitty." Her ear flicked at his voice, but she didn't turn around. "You should stop blaming yourself for everything. You can save the world, but you can't save everyone." She frowned and glanced over her shoulder to inquire about what he said, but he had turned around and was already walking away. She let him go. It wasn't until the absol came back five minutes later that she realized Blade had left to give them privacy. It wasn't until she was coaxed into her bed once more that she realized he had also left her some supplies. And it wasn't until she was nearly asleep that she realized that Gengar was absolutely right. Armaldo: [The boss of a dungeon] probably won't listen to what you have to say. You'll likely be attacked often. "Never laugh at live dragons." "Hearing voices no one else can hear isn't a good sign, even in the wizarding world." Snape was looking as though the first person to ask him for a Love Potion would be force-fed poison. Deliberately causing mayhem in Snape's Potions class was about as safe as poking a sleeping dragon in the eye. --In all likelyhood, the test recipes for the anti-Crucio were probably hidden, or encrypted magically. The first thing Harry felt he needed to do was find a journal that was not what it seemed. Miscellaneous: "Good timber does not grow with ease; the stronger the wind, the stronger the trees." "A dream which is not interpreted is like a letter unread." "Bluffing... A pair of balls beats everything!" "But it doesn’t make up for the fact that you’ll never love me." "No door is ‘closed’ more than temporarily. Remember that paper clip in your back pocket. Or that TNT you ‘borrowed’. That’ll work." "Did you just pour a bucket of beautiful on your face?" "As an aside - I don't really have much personal experience with the gift-giving "Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning." leaf-lover: Jerk chicken? Is that like where you pit your chicken against other chickens and they bitch it out at each other? "Sweetheart, your eggs are so damn small, you sure you ain't a robin, 'ho?" Other chicken: Kicks eggs out of first chicken's nest. "Bitch, yo' eggs just fell out." 'Team Edward vs Team Jacob: With the score at 2-3, players from both soccer teams were jostling for the ball. The Slovakian goalie was as entangled in the net as a Twilight plot.' "These are my values. If you don't like them, I have some more." "Drink coffee. You can do stupid things faster with more energy!" "I will fight until I have nothing left. If my weapon breaks, I’ll fight with my hands. If my hands are cut off, I’ll kick them with my feet. If my feet get cut off, I’ll crawl along the ground and bite them. If they kill me, I will still win by getting my blood on them and ruining their clothes." "Start every day with a smile and get over it." "You’re only as strong as the tables you dance on, the drinks you mix, and the friends you roll with." "Never go to bed mad. Stay up all night and plot horrible revenge." "Haikus are easy, "There’s a little truth behind every "just kidding," a little curiosity behind every "just wondering," a little knowledge behind every "I don’t know," and a little emotion behind every "I don’t care." " "Never take life seriously. No one ever gets out alive." "Smile so those around you don't see your pain. Hold your guard and never let it down. Protect your heart and believe in yourself." Today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday. "Because nothing's more sexual than sex." Even darkness has its colours. When you view it from an adult perspective, first you're like, "that's such a simplistic view of love." But then you realize, maybe it is that simple. "At least I got through the day without having any adventures, and only fell in love three times." Still, you realize that (from the movie Thor) Loki only strived so hard to become ruler of Asgard to be competitive with Thor, to make himself feel as Thor's equal; and when Loki let go of Thor in the end, Thor was left with nothing - but in a sense, Loki had nothing left either. perfer et obdura; dolor hic tibi proderit olim. "Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you." oQo -Speeches and Essays- June 22nd, 2009 "For whatever reason, this party was started as a celebration of LM...somehow... w; But, maybe we don't need a reason! After all, this is LM, the place of randomness, craziness and fun. We may have different lives in real life, where we seem different than the way we act here... But we know that, when we sit down to that moniter screen, we have friendly faces waiting behind their own to listen to us. And so, it is my honor (to be forced) to make this speech. *raises glass that appears out of nowhere* To LM!" August 12th, 2009 A leader is a person of great humility and respect, filled with knowledge they're willing to give without prejudice or a biased opinion. They cannot favor their friends or neglect their enemies - all relationships are broken before being mended in a limited fashion. Outside of their role, they may think and say whatever they wish, but once they don it again they have to become neutral to all they love or hate. A leader must have the ability to swallow their pride in order to lay a calm and wise hand on important matters. They may hold their own beliefs, but they cannot force anyone to share them. They cannot disrespect others for not sharing them, either, for a leader must accept that their mind may not work the same way as others. If a problem arises from a misunderstanding or a lack of communication, the leader must listen to all sides if the dispute and choose the correct one to support, not they one that they agree with. If a leader is offended by another leader or anyone that may have a differing opinion, they must not use their powers in anger. They must step back and purge themselves of all emotion so they may think rationally and logically. Setting their own feelings aside, they must confront the offender in a calm manner and never resort to violence of any sort (verbal abuse, attacking, etc.). If they're angry or jealous, it will only servce to tear them apart and ruin their imagine as an honorable leader. All thoughts must be shared or it will grow in the darkness of their heart. A leader must follow the rules - in fact, more strictly than others. They cannot enforce them if they don't obey them themselves. Having power does not and should not excuse laziness, stubbornness or a lack of integrity. If a leader breaks a rule, even with good reasons, they must be punished harshly. They cannot be allowed to just do as they will; they must set the example for everyone around them. A leader must be able to take responsibility and make sacrifices that the normal population can not and will not. All problems and mistakes weigh on their shoulders if they do not deal with them properly. They must cooperate with others to sustain harmony and peace, and at times they must place a firm and steady hand to keep it. A leader must be ready to lead as well as listen; to command as well as to assist; to be strict and yet flexible. Many things are expected of a leader; not just anyone can fill one's shoes. December 10th, 2009 Today, I have lost a little more faith in humanity. My day went fairly well, at first; despite my terrible shooting this morning, I realized my back sights had gotten loose and was the cause of my bad shooting on my standing and kneeling position (prone was pretty good, so I assume I loosened the sights afterwards). I had crazy bread (breadsticks from Little Caesar’s), green beans and pumpkin pie for lunch, thanks to some wonderful donations from my friends, and we weren’t attacked by a single bee that day. Marvelous. So, after thanking my friend profusely for letting me borrow her book about dragons (beautiful artwork, I tell you), I walked to my Physics class, hugging it closely to me in fear of it getting damaged or stolen. As usual, the others were loud and obnoxious, so I sat in my seat and read through the rest of the book. When I finished, we played Jeopardy to review the test. Afterwards, the most ludicrous thing happened. I had known that my fellow classmates didn’t like our teacher, but I still didn’t understand why–she was a beautiful young woman who, despite a slight accent and using different terms than we do, spoke with clarity and precision on the subject of Physics. They complained, however, simply because she came from Lebanon and how “they couldn’t understand a word she was saying,” despite the fact that I, a person with below average hearing, can understand everything she said perfectly. She was light and humorous, trying to make jokes that no one would laugh to, and I watched as they mocked her behind her back–and even in front of her, right where she could see them. She was either too honorable or too confused to reprimand them, and so the teasing continued. A particular group of kids behind me now spend every class trying to make her as furious and exasperated as possible. Today, though, after we were done reviewing, they asked for the answers to the review. She refused to give them to us. I didn’t care, because unlike everyone else I read and understood the book and her notes, simply because I bothered to listen and attempt to understand. (You can only help those that help themselves, and so I gave up on trying to coax them to listen. They, however, blamed her for their lack of knowledge and patience, and they mocked her for everything she was and called her a terrorist. I was furious but could not say a word, because of my terrible, terrible cowardice and my fear that they would attack me, physically or verbally.) So, they started to cause a riot in the classroom, screaming and hollering because they wanted the answers. I could understand why they were so angry, but she provided a much better reason than they could ever think of for their side of the debate. The review she had given us was, in fact, the exact same as the mid-term exam. If she gave us the answers, she afraid we would simply memorized (or write down) the letters and use them for the test. She said that if she did give us the answers, she would have to change the test, and that caused even more of a racket. They continued to hassle her for answers, until finally, one girl uttered the words that caused my heart to plummet into the icy depths of disgusted disbelief: “I think that she needs to go back to her Muslim country.” Other unflattering phrases, such as “f*cking b*tch” and, again, “terrorist” were flung around, and once again, they were said right in front of her. She did not react like she should have, or throw angry words back in their faces like I would have–instead, she simply looked back down to her computer screen and worked on clearing the Jeopardy game that was still there. It was there that I figured that the students couldn’t really be this naïve, this dense; surely, it was only a slight misunderstanding, and if I explained things to them, they would figure it out and feel ashamed of their incredible actions and words. But, as I tried to explain to a friend beside me, I realized I was the only one who thought this was possible–for I was the only one who realized they were wrong. Even he believed that she wasn’t speaking clearly and that she didn’t know how to teach, and I was dumbfounded as I heard even more criticism flow around me like a hateful river of boiling blood. When the afternoon announcements, always made five minutes before school was out (3:30 p.m.), began, I found that I had to leave the classroom–I had to get out of there before I screamed at their idiocy. Before I threw my desk at them and throttled them to try to make the oxygen rise to their brains. Before I turned around and punched the guy sitting behind me and tell him to take back what he called the teacher. I needed to leave. So, grabbing my backpack as the others started to get ready, I walked to the door and, after waiting a minute until they crowded around (blocking me from the teacher’s sight), I slipped out the door and started walking to the bus loop. As I did, the friend that sat beside me followed, and he told me, “You know it’s only three twenty-eight, right?” “Your point?” I didn’t care to listen to him. I didn’t care to hear him complain about problems that he had caused, the misunderstandings that he refused to correct, the faults that he rejected and labeled as hers. I didn’t want to see his face, because I was sure I would throw my fist at it if I did. I was so angry, so furious, that I walked right past the principal as I left for the buses a few minutes early. I don’t think he cared, because he didn’t stop me. Maybe he knew it was pointless. When I sat on the bus and stared out the window, I found myself crying. Crying for my Physics teacher, the woman who came to America to learn and be inspired and to teach and inspire others, and all she received was a disrespectful spit in the face. As I walked home from the bus stop in the bitter cold, I realized that the cold I felt in my heart made it feel like it was summertime. What gives them the right to criticize her? Those who do not bother to listen, to learn, and only give insolence and malice in return? Those who sit and talk and laugh, ignoring the teacher’s words and then saying she didn’t teach them that and how she couldn’t teach right? How could they be so dense, so oblivious to the fact that they were the cause of the problem, not the victim–the problem maker, not the problem solver? What compelled them to speak about their faults as if they were hers, not the cracks in their persona that they cherished so much and struggled to uphold? What gives them the right? (To be honest, I do think the world is getting too sensitive. I really do. But, there is a difference between "being too sensitive" and "being insulted." There is a difference between "freedom of speech" and "slander." There is a difference between "speaking your mind" and "cutting someone down." I will not stand for censorship, but I will not stand for cruelty of words.) February 23rd, 2010 Peter Singer's plan to rid the world of poverty is a fool's dream. To simply tell a citizen what to do with his money is not the wisest thing to do; he worked hard to collect his bounty, and he isn't going to donate it with wild abandon. Who's to say the man wants to send it out of his country? The money may do good elsewhere that could have easily been done in his own nation. Singer's plan is a direct attack on the people's rights. To be fair, it is clear where he is coming from; he was raised to help others and do whatever good deeds he felt needed doing. Such a dream is admirable, but it doesn't change the fact that the idea is still a dream. There are no such things as superheroes flying around the world to save everyone from every little thing, and there never will be. To hope for Superman to burst through your front door and hand you a suitcase filled with money is childish. What right do we have to feed these hopes? And when the plan breaks down, who will it hurt? The victims will feel bitter towards the suppliers of these "sugar-coated lies" and resent them for many years. Infants need to learn to walk on their own, and so does every nation in danger. During the Great Depression, the United States didn't beg for assistance or plead for outside influences. American citizens instead voted a man into office who could dig them out of the Depression and back into business. It would be an insult to America's pride if we turn around and take another nation through its "baby steps." In the end, the nation would be unable to stand on its own and would crumble underneath the weight of the responsibilities it had neglected to take before. To simply give a nation money and expect it to be stable is ridiculous because if it was unstable in the first place, then it would need to fix more than its financial issues. It all returns to the nation being independent of others and having sovereignty. The most important issue, however, is one all Americans have pondered at some time: "What about us?" If we send this money overseas, it obviously won't be in the States where we all live. America has its own problems to deal with, its own poverty, its own hunger, and its own people. To help others before we even help ourselves would defeat the purpose of sending money in the first place–to end any and all poverty in the world, to give people better lives. Doesn't America care about its citizens, too? We should fix all of our problems before jumping into other people's nations to fix theirs. Caring about the world is pointless if we don't take care of ourselves. Peter Singer is a man with a big heart and little foresight. He created a plan without thinking over the repercussions, and its flaws are blaringly obvious when examined closely. Good intentions do not excuse poor judgment and whimsical dreams. Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 Well, I'll be completely honest and admit that this year sort of flew by; I was surprised when DB's PM came to remind me of LM's birthday, and when I looked at the date and realized it was only a few days away, I was like, "Holy crap, I haven't had any time to prepare!" I had wanted to write something special, like the chapter of my LM Mansion story celebrating our first birthday, but between faulty internet connections and family issues, I haven't had the time, energy or patience to do so. I'm just glad that I was able to get on today at all, let alone talk to you guys. And you know what? That's okay. I love spending any bit of time I can get with you guys, and I'd do nearly anything to help any LMer here (and not here, for that matter). People like SU and Glory have written inspiring stories that brought us together, and newcomers like Misstress and Sunny once were help keep our bond alive. It's hard to describe how much I love and care for LM, even though I've written and uploaded over 600,000 words in stories and over 11,000 posts in this forums. It's like...a hug. A hug is something so simple yet meaningful that it's difficult to explain, and although people describe the action they can never truly tell others the feeling and emotions behind it. It's an embrace that pulls two hearts closer to one another, brings warm smiles to people's faces and reminds us that we have someone who cares about our well-being. It can be given freely or sparingly, but it means just as much no matter how often it's given or who distributes and who receives them. I've often just glomped people here or in the real world without a second thought, but I mean every hug that I give and love every person I give it to. So, here's to another year full of hugs, hellos and good-byes! *offers cup for a toast* To the Legendary Muses Forums, and all of Fanfiction! Let's enjoy every day and make the most of it, shall we? oQo Lots of dragon-y love (and cookies!), |
