![]() Author has written 4 stories for How to Train Your Dragon. Writing is my hobby and while I’m not such a great writer, I’ve been told I’m a good story teller, so apologies for any errors, and always feel free to leave comments with suggestions. I’ve only recently gotten into fanfiction writing, but I’ve always enjoy reading it. I have little children and work full time, so my writing is my break from my crazy life. I have a few things outlined, but the story I’ve been working on posting is “The Path’s Fate Didn’t Give Us”. It takes place after HTTYD 2, but I tried to work in as many characters from the TV shows as I could. The concept was inspired by something I read once by the Linguist, Deborah Tannen, she wrote a book about sisters and said we see our sisters as people who live the lives we could have lived, being that we have the same DNA and look similar. If you google her and sisters, a great article will come up that inspired many ideas for this story. Anyhow, I took that idea and wondered if after HTTYD2 Hiccup and Astrid ever wondered about how their lives could have been different. I added some OCs (including a sadistic villain as a foil to make Hiccup reflect on his own life, married to Astrid's sister). One other thing of note – some of the things about Viking culture are real, some I made up, so don’t quote me for your history reports, kids. If you do have ideas about Viking culture you want to talk about and think I should mix in PM me and I can think about it, but once again, I've taken a lot of liberties with history (after all I don't think Vikings rode dragons, correct me if I'm wrong on that). The other story I’m working on is “The Path I Must Take”. It’s sort of a prequal to the other one. On the surface it’s about Hiccup and his Dad and Hiccup’s commitment to Astrid and Hiccups duty to Berk, but on another level, I tried to capture the sense of anxiety people feel during life transitions. I also wanted to show how familiar places ground us -- Hiccup is important to Berk and its people, but Berk and its people are important to Hiccup. I wanted to capture the nostalgia we feel when going home after having started another part of our lives. I was inspired by reading somewhere that RTTE was supposed to be HTTYD the College Years and thought about what it’s like to come home from college and visit old friends and places. Or to graduate from college and then come back to visit. I love the idea that places can be characters in stories. |
