Diaval has always been a raven-man, and Stefan wasn't the first boy Maleficent met.

"Maleficent's right hand was stroking her shoulder rhythmically, her fingernails grazing her skin. She shivered despite the warm spring weather. Diaval was beginning to piece things together. Her sorrow, her self-imposed isolation, and her eyes. Those eyes were slowly killing him. They were a sweet poison flooding his veins."

"Diaval's hands gently took Maleficent's arm. Maleficent's reaction was was instantaneous. She flinched away from him, her usually perfectly removed expression twisting into a grimace. "I'm not going to hurt you." Diaval muttered comfortingly, sad at Maleficent's reaction. He had suspected that her story was one of abuse. He could see it in the anguish always present in her eyes."

"The marred veins were a grotesque scarlet, still burning and pulsing from that beating he had received just days prior. They trailed like fine webs across his chest, his arms, his face."

He feels it, always, the shapes fitted just under his skin. He's a Raven—always will be, no matter what shape he takes, and it shows when he's bodily other, but he doesn't think his Mistress quite knows how much room a Raven has underneath.
