Flavorizer." - Mr. L "SHAG?! This mustache is pure Luigi!" - Luigi RULES OF GOOD WRITING We've all seen it - poor grammar, sloppy story work and terrible character development. Things that the average FF.net user really doesn't want to waste time reading. It doesn't have to be My immortal quality, but it can still be bad. If one of the three isn't well planed, then a story might as well fall apart. So here they are- general rules for great writing. 1/ Get an original storyline There are millions of the standard stock story. "Characters from fandom X in highschool" or "my OC is transported into fandom X's world! what will they do?" and even "characters of Fandom X are in a game show to win 100000000000 (currency of fandom)!" Seriously, it doesn't matter what you do to make it original, most people will just keep scrolling. That's what I do, that's what my friends do, that's what everyone with a good sense in writing does. Originality is the goal of FF.net, so try an original plotline! See where it takes you. 2/ Stick to cannon as much as possible Nothing bugs me more than "Cannon rape". This is where you alter cannon facts that everyone knows - it's like moving Big Ben to New York. It just doesn't work. Everyone knows it doesn't belong, and everyone will complain. This also means that when you're trying to get two unlikely characters together, person A, who may be a quiet and distant person in cannon, falls head-over-heels in love the instant Character B walks in the room. It just doesn't work, people will ask why he's Out of Character (OoC). 3/No OC's until you are good with cannons. Yes, this is a site for FANFICTION. However, most writers who are just beginning make a huge mistake they make a OC. And that OC is the perfect OC. S/he can fly, has heat vision, can heal cancer, extremely smart, solves world hunger, is loved by everyone but the fandom creep, the list goes on. And if you think about it, that makes most people's first OC all identical! There's a word for this type of OC- Mary Sue, or Gary Stu for guys. NOBODY likes a sue. They are boring, predictable, and usually finish everything they set out to do in a few chapters then proceed to make love to the fandom hottie. EVERY TIME. Trust me, you'll get a million "SUE" complaints. Not worth the time. 4/Give your characters depth Yes, Character A is trying to save person C. but why? because it's morally right? well, maybe s/he owes him something. Or they're childhood friends. When everyone has a back story, the tale becomes more deep, and more people will become fans. BUT if you're doing a back story, be sure to SLOWLY tell everyone's story over the course of the tale. You've got as many chapters as you like! Stretch things out so it doesn't seem rushed. Stop at a side town for a side chapter that has no effect on the main story. It may uncover new details to the cold exterior of Character A, revealing a soft personality underneath. 5/Read through your story before posting THIS IS CRITICAL! Looking through the story for small grammar mistakes and typos can really affect how people receive your story. Instead of "I heard something in the closet", it becomes "I head something in the closet." Funny mistake, but it's one none the less. Just fix it. Grammar Nazis will leave you alone, and it'll be much easier to read. Many people will leave a story, disregarding it if it has poor language use. 6/ HAVE FUN! Story writing is all about this. Hits and reviews come after - remember, write for fun, not fame. It ruins a great story when you see "5 reviews and I'll post the next chappie". It really does. And what will those reviews say? "good story keep going". Strive to give good reviews and push for others to give them to you. Remember, reviews are to point out what you did good, and where to improve. Think like a movie critic, and take all criticism as help to move forward with! SIDE NOTE - There is a spell checker directly in the document manager. click the icon on the far left - it should say "abc" with a check mark. Now you have no excuse to have bad grammar! |
