Well for starters, I have not really tried fan fiction much. I wrote one and put it up on DA a long time ago, but after the first two chapters I got bored and rushed the last one. Needless to say, it ended up being really crappy. Other fan fictions are usually really fun, though. I love when you can tell it is supposed to be crack-based or serious and i get enjoyment out of critiquing people on how to make it better. Writing is amazing in how many different ways you can write but you always want the same outcome, a happy ready that had their emotions played with slightly (can't think of a better way of putting it). All in all, I'm more of a fantasy writer so I am sad to say I am not ably to join in the fun as much, but I just feel so much more enjoyment from creating my own world instead of adding to another. But, I enjoy a good ff so I am here to tell you all, do your best and improve all you can. Good day :D
