The longer they knew each other, the more Shinra was convinced that his friend's statement that he "loved all humans" was a lie, a front put up to protect his fragile little heart. Because Izaya did seem to favor some humans over others, and that group was much smaller than the whole of humanity he liked to ramble on about. Everything Izaya did seemed to be to get attention.

Izaya just wants to go home in peace, so why is this damn dog following him!

L wanted to save Light. If that meant spending a little time watching the contents of a disk that magically appeared, so be it. Any help was welcome at this point in the investigation because every move he made felt like a step towards his own death.
