It excites me that there is still a lot on the market that this longtime fan hasn’t noticed, and it’s permitting me to reconnect for the music. The rediscovery has shown me that there is a side of the band that I’ve failed to see more than the decades. Which is one of uncertainty, doubt, and genuine nervousness. Possibly it’s because of the bravado Bono approaches interviews with, or the tightness with the messaging the band has conveyed publicly, that I’ve overlooked that vulnerable side of U2. When I 1st saw From The Sky Down, the perspective Paul McGuinness gave about the rise of U2 in 1987 made me question if U2 wasn’t as confident about themselves as I thought. McGuinness stated, “Remember that in the course of the (Joshua Tree) tour, we went from getting an arena band to becoming a stadium band and had to learn the way to do that sort of on the run. This was in the days ahead of video reinforcement.” Adam continued, “It was hell. It was literally just us in a stadium.” What drove it household for me was when Larry then mentioned, “We were out of our depth and not quite proficient enough to become consistent.” My websites: Waves of Regret, Waves of Joy - Jesus, Judas and U2 |
