"Don't let age define what you can and can't do." - Luna Jackson Ω Ψ Ω Ψ Hello, all of my loyal subjects of Fanfiction.net. Okay, so, no loyal subjects (cause that would be kinda creepy) but I still have a couple avid readers so I'm good with that, and I thank you all dearly. Luna Jackson's Advice For Percy Jackson and the Olympians Fanfiction: 1. Flamers Don't say "No flames please" because it's like shooting a firework in the air and screaming "Come and get me!" at the top of your lungs on a loud-speaker. Flamers will come by the boat loads to come tear your story down and rip it to shreds to be cast away in Tartarus. I'm not the type of person to write rude things without constructive criticism, but I know of people who will, so that is part of the reason I am offering my services! 2. OC's and Mary Sues. If you decide to make an original character (which a lot of people do), don't make her a Mary Sue. By definition (my definition), a Mary Sue is an OC that is perfect in every way. Perfect long, shiny hair and dazzling eyes that change colors when they are in the sea, in the sun, at night when the moon is out, fighting someone, or just for no apparent reason. Mary Sues can also be living a totally rotten, horrible life. Abusive parents, no friends except one (who for some weird reason always wear hats and walks with a limp), or just a life that's completely screwed up the only thing that can fix it would be traveling to some far-off camp and learning that they have magical powers of awesomeness. To have an OC that is not a Mary Sue can sometimes be a hard task for some people. You need to make sure they are not totally perfect with and have some faults (because actual normal human beings--even if they are half god--have faults) but also, not someone who lives a completely terrible life and ran away when they were 8. That's not original is it? 3. Forbidden Children I know you all know what I'm talking about when I say "forbidden children." I'm talking about the maiden goddesses. I'm sure you've heard of them: Artemis, Hera, Hestia, etc. Those who have vowed to be maidens forever. But people seem to like to break this rule, and you can do that but it has to be original. You can't go saying "My name is Luna Diana Artemis Moon and I have purple eyes that also change to gold and long black hair that is super straight and never gets messed up even when I had to fight my demon math teacher Ms. Insert name here." Obviously, she's a daughter of Artemis. But since when do you know Artemis to have purple eyes that change colors to gold? It's very cliche for children of Artemis stories for them to have those traits, so you have to be able to come up with something, oh, I don't know, normal? No person on the face of the planet has purple eyes. Sorry, but it doesn't happen even if they are demigods. Now, this applies to all of the maiden goddesses. Don't make them Mary Sues (as stated above) and make them at least seem semi-normal. 4. ADHD and Dyslexia We all know that demigods (in Rick Riordan's stories) are supposed to have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or dyslexia. We all know it, so you don't have to emphasize it in every sentence. For example, saying "While I was taking the garbage out last night I couldn't read the signs for where to put the trash because of my dyslexia, so I stuck it in a restaurant instead. And after that, my ADHD was acting up so I ran around the street three times and couldn't keep focused on where I was going." That's not how it happens. With dyslexia, you can read, but the letters just get jumbled up sometimes so it's harder to read then people without it. ADHD is a hyperactive disorder, but it doesn't mean they are going to be going crazy at every single moment of every single day or jumping out of their seats in math because they couldn't sit still any longer. If you don't know a lot about the disorders, then you should read up on them more to give your readers a sense that you actually know what you're talking about. I will update with more helpful tips in the coming weeks, but if you have any questions, feel free to message me. Also, I know I'm not perfect and that I don't know everything in the world or think that I'm the best author to have ever graced this planet, but these are things I've learned from experience, so they are helpful tools to people who need them.
