If you a homeowner/renter then you may be wondering what is radon gas. Radon is a gas found in the soil and it actually comes from a breakdown of uranium. Radon gas is radioactive and studies show long-term exposure can cause cancer. Iowa happens to be the #1 state in the country with the most concentration of radon gas. What makes radon so dangerous is the gas can not be seen or smelled and the only way to see if the gas is present is to carry out a radon gas test. Radon can be found in any building, school, hospitals, and it doesn’t matter the size, shape or location. Some states have more concentration the others.

Here is a visual survey from the New Jersey department of environmental protection.

There are regulations and laws in place that all landlords and inspectors must follow to complete a radon gas test upon moving into a home. If you find out that high levels of radon gas are present don’t panic, there are various steps you can take to lower the gas drastically to safe levels.

How To Protect Your Home From Radon Gas
First, you need to determine if your home is at risk. To do this you can go to your local town and ask them about a radon gas detector.

Short-term testing: The quickest way to test is with short-term tests. Short-term tests remain in your home for two days to 90 days, depending on the device. “Charcoal canisters,”“alpha track,”“electret ion chamber,”“continuous monitors,” and “charcoal liquid scintillation” detectors are most commonly used for short-term testing. Because radon levels tend to vary from day to day and season to season, a short-term test is less likely than a long-term test to tell you your year-round average radon level. If you need results quickly, however, a short-ter m test followed by a second short-term test may be used to decide whether to fit your home.

LONG-TERM TESTING: Long-term tests remain in your home for more than 90 days. “Alpha track” and “electret” detectors are commonly used for this type of testing. A long-term test will give you a reading that is more likely to tell you your home’s year-round average radon level than a short-term test.

HowToUseaTestKit: Follow the instructions that come with your test kit. If you are doing a short-term test, close your windows and outside doors and keep them closed as much as possible during the test. Heating and air conditioning system fans that re-circulate air may be operated. Do not operate fans or other machines which bring in air from outside. Fans that are part of a radon-reduction system or small exhaust fans operating only for short periods of time may run during the test. If you are doing a short-term test lasting just 2 or 3 days, be sure to close your windows and outside doors at least 12 hours before beginning the test, too. Here is a free pdf courtesy of EPA

Radon Gas Symptoms and How it Effects You
Radon is a poisonous gas and the effects of exposure may not be known for up to 10 years. The gas seems to affect all the cells in the body. Remember it is a breakdown of uranium. Radon gas is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer. What actually causes the cancer is the radon decay of the gas. It produces little solid particles and some are just the precise size to be easily inhaled and deposited in the lung. Once the particles are deposited cancer is initiated. The EPA estimates that 21,000 lung cancer deaths are caused by radon gas each year. Here is some more info to help you.
