Advice that has helped me: Write your chapters in abundance. By this, I mean, write two or three (whatever number is most suitable) before you post just one and stay ahead. Try not to post them all at once, either, and try to post them regularly, (I'll go ahead and put emphasis on TRY, I have tried with some of my older fics to update regularly and failed on that part). Write your stories like they are actually going to be published as a book, or similar. You wouldn't want people reading your own book and pointing out a grammatical or spelling error every few sentences, but even well-known authors can make typos... that's why they have editors and fanfiction has Beta readers (even though not all of us can find a good one). If this is something out of your reach, a good spell check helps.

Reading and writing preferences: I have broadened my horizons and although most of my published material is all OC/SI, I am more dedicated to canon character fics :) I don't enjoy lemons, harems, yaoi, or yuri and associated themes. It's just not my type and everyone on fanfiction has their likes and dislikes. I also don't for excessive cursing. I can take so much before I automatically classify the fic as immature.
