After Harry is injured protecting the philosopher's stone, Minerva McGonnagall promises herself that she will do a better job looking after him. That promise will eventually lead to large changes in Harry's life. This will ultimately be Harry/Ginny, but since it starts at the end of Harry's first year, it will take a while for any romantic relationships to develop.

Ginny is lonely, and missing her brothers at Hogwarts. When George tells her that Harry is also lacking friends, Ginny decides to write to him. The two children become pen pals, and firm friends. Harry's going to need all the friends he can get, because ripples from this small change are about to make his difficult life even harder.

During Christmas at Grimmauld Place, Harry and Ginny realize they can help each other overcome the memories of their past. Watching them, Sirius finds the courage to forgive himself for his past mistakes and start living again. Umbridge, however has other plans. She expels the couple, starting them on a very perilous journey. *Mentions of child abuse and alcohol/substance use*
