I'm an English major, who is fascinated with J.K. Rowlings worls of Harry Potter. Although not a huge fan of romantic fiction in general, there are endering qualities to a good romantic "fan-fic." I've come to apprecitate the nuances of romance stories when reading and writing about the Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny "ships," sorry to all of you who disagree. All in all I believe fan-fiction is a wonderful way to bide our time until the publication of the sixth book, and is a creative literary outlet.
