AU. Maria arrives at the Captain's door in the middle of the night. Set the same night as the puppet show. Is an alternate version of my story, "Here Comes the Sun".

"It was possible that his mind was playing tricks on him. It wouldn't be the first time he'd conjured her up as a familiar face in a crowd of strangers." Precisely 10 months to the day since Fraulein Maria's sudden departure from 53 Aigen, Georg catches a glimpse of golden hair when on an outing in town. What he later discovers sheds light on truths he's not yet ready to confront.

"But he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined!" Maria has been told that there are certain rooms that are not to be disturbed, but she never listens.

What happens when the life you've ended up with is not the one you were born to live? Is it possible to erase the past and start over? "You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing...nearby is the country they call life."

The late afternoon breeze stirring across the lake was a welcome relief as the warm afternoon sun inched its way towards the horizon. Amongst the lengthening shadows, dragonflies dipped and rose just above the water's surface, sending the smaller insects skittering out of their way. Georg breathed deeply, contentedly.

At year's end, a fragile kind of happiness has taken hold for the von Trapp family and their governess.
