His childhood friend will say he's a little weird, switches from polite speech to swears-a-lot at the drop of a hat, and has the habit of giving things to strangers because they asked him.

After Voldemort had attacked the Potters there were no trace left of James Potter other than his wand and glasses, and people simply assumed Voldemort had vanished him.
