Deep in the First Long Interval, dragon populations throughout Pern are eking along without the threat of Thread to spur them. When Gendine, a competent, albeit slightly awkward Holder girl, gets Searched for the High Reaches queen but ultimately Impresses a "green," she must defy stereotypes for the good of her Weyr and her heart.
