Here's a little something for the ones that bother to look at my profile - maybe after I left a comment or something. I like reading fiction - all kinds. Mostly I like horror and dark stories. Sometimes, dark stories can have a happy ending, but not often. I like those the most, I guess. Interaction between people, their emotions, and the things they do - and why they do it - fascinate me. I like to read a story with well developed characters, where nothing is missed and where everything has its purpose. I read CSL LV slash the most, it is my favorite past time and thing for killing the hours of insomnia. When not reading Stephen King's novels, I end up here. And here's a little something about writing. First of all, try not to make many mistakes when it comes to spelling and/or gramma. My English in not the best, it is not my native language, but I try. It is such a shame to see native English speakers old enough to read and write 'naughty' things that just don't know how to spell or write something. That's what betas are for. Or school for that matter. Second - patience. If you change something in your story, please - PLEASE - go back to the chapter where that something can be seen and correct it. Don't just mention it later on thinking it's enough. It's not. Also, please read your story once it's written, or few times, and correct what needs to be corrected. Readers usually don't like to deal with too many mistakes. Serious writers and readers don't. I've found stories that hurt my brain, that have no comma or full stop in entire paragraph. It makes it hard to understand, where something starts or where it ends, it is just a major turn down. Such stories I just don't read - I start, see what's there, and leave screaming. That's about the technicalities. Now with the rest. Even one shots should have nicely flowing story line. I found so many beautiful one shots it's a shame there still are those hard to read. Not to speak about multi chaptered stories. Those longer stories should have a nice plot. You know, reason behind the theme. If you want to develop something, do it properly. I've written enough to know what I'm talking about. I've read much more, and found many beautiful long, really long stories that just stick with me. The point is, don't write about something that has nothing to do with the story, or about something that will never appear again and has no impact at all. Also, human body can sustain only so much damage. You can't torture someone beyond reason, and still make them live to see the other day. You can spill only so much blood before body goes into shock and shuts down. You can cut only so much skin before it goes beyond repair. You can stab someone only so many times before they simply die. You can break only so much bones before their leg/arm/body just can't heal. And my personal favorite - and this I found in otherwise very good story - you can shoot someone in the chest, make them have transfusion, make them live - but you can't expect them to get out of the hospital in a day and a half, and then carry a fully grown man through dessert for God knows how long. I mean - really. Even if it's Hulk, it just wouldn't be possible. Do you not know that a pierced lung is a very serious, very dangerous wound?? That the person with that kind of wound is first to dehydrate and die, even when the other had been a bit longer in the dessert and with other wounds? Keep it realistic, people. Even in spooky supernatural stories - people are people. When you talk about demons, angels and gods then - and only then - you have more freedom. Human body is fragile, though tough, thing. Another major problem is emotional trauma. Even the toughest people brake. We are not the same, and some of us can sustain much more, but not all. You can't torture someone, humiliate them, do I don't know what - and then make them fine after they are rescued. Even after enough time for the recovery had passed - there are bound to be some drawbacks. I found a story, not here, where a man was abused for more than 20 years (if I remember correctly he was about 16-17 when it started), and tortured, and used, and there were so many horrible things done to him (being closed in a cellar in complete darkness for as long as three months at the time was one of the 'punishments'), that should break him beyond any repair. But not only was he great after he was freed, but ready to embark a new life head on too. I remember thinking - WOW after finishing the story, than starting to laugh. Now, that is sci-fi if I ever saw one. Also, I found a great story about Nick after the Grave Danger. It was done with such care it was perfect. His recovery, and how others felt - the best I have ever seen. I admire that author. And now I'm finished ranting. I put this here so if I leave a comment that is less than 'great job', the author would understand. If I leave a comment with something someone doesn't like, I don't want them to think it's flame. It's not, I don't do that, but lately it's been increasingly hard for me to keep quiet after some really horrible stories I found. I don't write fan fiction because I don't think I would be good at that. I write original, mostly horror stories. If you're trying to become a writer find a good beta or other writer (often it's the same) to help you. State that in A/N in your story, and take criticism as something that will make you a better writer. I had people help me in the past, and still do. Nobody's perfect. |
