Merlin swears he doesn't do it on purpose, but oh, Arthur always sees through that lie, always knows that his words are insincere; the amused smile he always wears as he says it gives him away. "You're going to hurt my feelings, you know, if you keep going about accusing me of things like that."

He calls it falling because he is still waiting for the impact, is still waiting for some special sort of moment when he knows without a doubt that there is nothing between his heart and Merlin's.

Scratching those words he couldn't say aloud onto stray pieces of parchment when he found himself with spare moments in between tasks and chores... well, that was easy, wasn't it? They weren't really words then, they were just ink, just strokes on parchment that didn't really matter or mean anything. It wasn't real when he wrote it down, it just was. "Merlin, what are you writing?"

"And by the way, you're really terrible at the sneaking thing, aren't you? If you're going to watch someone, you don't stare so openly at them, you steal glances, bring books and computers and phones with you so they can't catch you looking at them." He would probably make a very good stalker.

Arthur wants coffee, but Merlin isn't so keen on leaving their warm bed to get up to make it for him without some sort of incentive. "I might just propose when you get back."

- "Idiot, idiot, idiot", are chanting children in the muddy street. Arthur stops, a bit dazzled. He brings his hand to his forehead to shield his eyes and his heart aches watching their dancing figures in the steaming light.
