A few weeks after "White Lines" (6x11). Jane and Lisbon are still adjusting to their new jobs and to working with each other again, when suddenly everything turns upside down. Faced with her career, her freedom and even her life at risk, Lisbon has to outsmart an old adversary, whilst the system she used to believe in turns against her.

This short piece attempts to flesh out Jane's decision making process in Byzantium, and is set during that episode, as he leaves the tavern. Now I've added a longer companion point of view from Lisbon, which is woven in and out over the last few episodes.

Lisbon goes missing. When Jane and the team find her they are faced with a shocking discovery of what has happened to her during the missing month, leaving both she and Jane disoriented. The rational thing to do—the safe thing to do—would be to walk away from Jane as though this moment had never happened. The stakes were already high enough now with Red John so close, and tensions were escalating between them both. But despite all that—or perhaps because of it—Lisbon was tired of rationality, of reason, and of safety. Post Red John's Rules.

After Jane pushes Lisbon too far, she decides to change her life dramatically. "I'll go then, as there is clearly nothing left here anyway. This place has become a prison for you Jane, sure the walls are in your mind but they are just as confining and I no longer want to be your cellmate." Initial angst but then romance, I gave it a T for mild language.

After fleeing to Venezuela what does Jane think about, what does he do? What are Lisbon's reactions to his letters each month? How does Jane turn the situation to his advantage? Here's my response to the idea Jane was passive and unthinking in exile.
