He can separate and process and dispose, and after that he can close the hatch up and be ready again, clean and precise and smooth, for another day.

"You're being kind this morning," John murmurs, mow scratching lightly at the soft dark hair at the nape of his neck. "Mmm," Sherlock sighs. "Tired." "Did you sleep at all last night?" "No. Silk ribbons and refrigerator bacteria," he explains without really explaining anything at all.

Mary knew that shooting Sherlock would cause both her and John pain. But she never considered how much, especially if Sherlock didn't make it.

Even Sherlock Holmes got sad. Never-mind that he didn't show it until something bad happened... like his Mum dying. Good old John-Sherlock h/c/angst goodness, set after Series Three but no major spoilers.

John removed his hand, letting it fall. "How didn't I notice you were sick?" Sherlock sniffled. "Because there was no reason to employ your medical prowess," he muttered, rubbing his nose.
