Author has written 5 stories for Artemis Fowl. It's been six years since I last spent significant time in this place. Six long years have passed, and in that time Eoin Colfer has published three Artemis Fowl books. Let me be clear: I do not consider them canon. For a few reasons: 1. I have not read The Lost Colony or The Time Paradox. So I don't know what canonicity will entail. 2. I am peeved that Commander Root died in The Opal Deception. :P 3. More importantly, it doesn't seem that the world of the Lower Elements has been more fully fleshed out in the second trilogy. All sorts of strange externalities have been added to the plot, but the basic premise (of a technologically and magically advanced underground undiscovered civilization) has not been significantly progressed. There has been no fleshing out of the LE's economy, government, or other sociological dimensions. (That's what I gather from the reviews, and from reading OD. Correct me if I'm wrong.) 4. Scientific errors. If solinium is radiation, then it cannot be outrun. Having Holly outrun light was to me the jump-the-shark moment. Such basic errors should not be made by science fiction authors, not without extremely detailed explanation. As such, I will not be referring to plot elements found in those books in my fanfiction. If I do take it up again. It's still a good place to be, though, writing fiction. :) A dystopian view of the LE The LE as depicted in the first Artemis Fowl trilogy is a place of stagnant, plateauing genius. Danger rarely arises, as evidenced by the system(s)' utter inability to handle Opal Koboi's machinations. Foaly's inventions seem to be just souped-up versions of ideas already extant within the human scientific community as of 2009, with the possible exception of the Moonbelt. The LE is complacent and unimaginative. Small communities do not have the critical mass necessary for cultural phenomena to emerge. In my "Fairies revisited" arc the LE is going to be shaken up like it has never been before. Polar gas outbreaks, tectonic destruction, magic breaking loose, and above all the certainty of human contact - all are going to bring the LE to unprecendented states of crisis, and enable unprecedented displays of heroism, cunning, and sheer luck. |
