Celebrating ten years of fan fiction—July 11, 2009–July 11, 2019

I write fan fiction about talking cartoon animals. Read on if you would like to know more about me.

Name: Classified J. Classified (well, at least the "J" part is real)

Location:
Connecticut, United States

Age:
Tricenarian

Sex/gender: Male

Occupation:
Classified

Political party:
Republican

Political ideology: Conservative

Religion: Christian (albeit an imperfect one who does not regularly attend church and whose faith probably isn't as strong as it could be)

Orientation: Straight

Relationship status: Single by choice, and committed to remaining so. Dating, relationships, marriage, parenthood, etc. are all great things for many people, but these things just aren't for everyone. Some of us just aren't cut out to have another person so deeply and intimately involved in our lives, and to be just as involved in theirs. Or we find complete singlehood easier, freer, cheaper, and more advantageous. While I ship talking cartoon animals in some of my stories, I've never been in or pursued any kind of relationship myself—I'm simply a writer, not a lover. (I'm still a conservative, though. I reject the "hookup culture" that is popular in today's world, I believe that one ought to wait until marriage, and I'm strongly pro-life.)

Professional sports teams I support: Pittsburgh Penguins, Stanley Cup champions 1991, 1992, 2009, 2016, 2017—all in my lifetime; Pittsburgh Steelers, Super Bowl champions 1974 (IX), 1975 (X), 1978 (XIII), 1979 (XIV), 2005 (XL), 2008 (XLIII)—two in my lifetime; Pittsburgh Pirates, World Series champions 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971, 1979—none in my lifetime

U.S. states I have set foot in: 14 (CT, NY, MA, RI, NJ, PA, MD, VT, NH, DE, VA, ME, WV, OH) and D.C.

Penguin species seen at zoos:
4 (African, gentoo, macaroni, king)

Penguins touched: 1 (African penguin at the National Aviary, September 2012)

Bats/throws: Right/right

Votes in presidential elections: John McCain (2008), Mitt Romney (2012), Donald Trump (2016)

Votes in Republican presidential primaries: Mitt Romney (2008), Rick Santorum (2012), Ted Cruz (2016)

Votes in other elections: My valid votes have always been for Republican candidates. Upon rare occasion, all at the local level, I have left an office blank on my ballot or written in an ineligible name due to either a personal reason or the party not having a candidate to vote for. I have never voted for a Democrat for any office, and I never will. In Republican primaries, I have always supported the candidate I believe to be the most conservative (or the least liberal) option. I have never missed voting in any election or Republican primary, whether local, state, or federal.

Likelihood of one day running for U.S. president: 5 percent (with the odds of winning quite unknown)

Favorite food: Pizza

Favorite drink: Name-brand soft drinks such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, and Mountain Dew. (Always the real stuff, not caffeine-free or diet varieties.)

Dietary practices: Ovo-lacto vegetarianism (since 1995). I don't believe in slaughtering animals for food or sport.

Some favorite TV shows (not an exhaustive list): I Love Lucy, Monk, Mr. Bean, The Penguins of Madagascar, Prison Break, Sherlock, The Simpsons (older episodes), SpongeBob SquarePants (older episodes), Tru Calling, Walker, Texas Ranger

Some favorite movies (not an exhaustive list): Bean, The Blues Brothers, Coco, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Great Mouse Detective, Homeward Bound, The Lion King (1994), Meet the Parents, MouseHunt, National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), Robin Hood (1973), Smokey and the Bandit, Toy Story, Up, Zootopia

Music preferences: Generally conservative in music tastes, including classic rock, country, and some pop. I'm also a fan of various songs that have been hits throughout the decades from a variety of artists and genres.

Date I became a fan of The Penguins of Madagascar: April 1, 2009 (with the episodes "Paternal Egg-Stinct" and "Happy King Julien Day!")

Date I became a fan of Zootopia: June 26, 2016 (on DVD—I didn't see the movie at the theater)

Favorite penguin (The Penguins of Madagascar): Skipper (he's also the one I'm most like—we both focus strongly on results. I am, however, not as paranoid, and I've never been to Denmark.)

Opinion on Skilene and other Penguins of Madagascar pairings:
I am a supporter of Skilene, although I generally write it as just a strong friendship with the occasional "hint" at something more in my stories. I do so as a matter of personal style mainly to keep in line with canon, to maintain continuity, and to allow readers to draw their own conclusions based on the characters' hints and interactions. I also believe that any feelings Skipper and Marlene might have for each other must first have a solid foundation in friendship and trust. However, I have broken from this "rule" of not directly revealing feelings with Skilene on three occasions: in my project A Skilene-Filled September, briefly in Beyond DNA, and in Operation: Fluffy Pink Sugar. As far as other pairings are concerned, I am not a shipper or an active supporter of Marlene's being with anyone but Skipper, but I am not against reading and enjoying a good story involving her and another beau if one happens to come my way. While for years I had no strong feelings either way about the possibility of a relationship between Kowalski and Doris, after watching the episode "The Penguin Who Loved Me," I will say that the idea of Dorski is kind of cute. I have no interest in slash pairings.

Opinion on the WildeHopps pairing in Zootopia: I support the idea of Nick and Judy as a couple as their friendship continues to deepen. If there is a sequel film, I hope WildeHopps will be in it. However, if Disney decides not to do WildeHopps, I would much rather have Disney continue to be vague about Nick and Judy's relationship than crush their love (and our hearts) by pairing Nick with a new female fox character and pairing Judy with a new male rabbit character.

Original characters:
Because I try to avoid my writing conflicting with canon, most of my stories do not feature original characters. However, seven of my stories feature OCs with significant roles. In Injustice, two Magellanic penguins, Louise and Norma, appear. East of Nowhere features the minor characters Paula, a hawk, and Lynne and Ray, Marlene's parents (although since everyone has parents, I didn't "create" these two per se, I just gave them names and roles within the story). Beyond DNA features my most major and personal favorite OC, Skipper's daughter, MaryRose, as well as three supporting human characters: Roland, Connie, and Katelyn. MaryRose returns in Operation: Fluffy Pink Sugar, a short sequel to Beyond DNA. La Mademoiselle features Emmeline, a French female penguin. She was created by fellow author jackandjill2, who also wrote the first chapter of the story. The "Three Minutes" installment of Zootopia Scenes and Shorts features a mountain lion named Mateo. Lastly, two humans, Chelsea and Liz, appear in Off the Shelf. (There are a few very minor OCs in some of my stories as well, but I am listing only the most significant ones here for now.)

Additional work: In addition to the fanfics published here, I have written a short Penguins of Madagascar fanfic that places a few non-fictional humans in a unique situation. Titled Getting Into Character, the 2013 story can be found on my Fanpop, DeviantArt, and Archive of Our Own accounts. (I cannot publish it here because it contains non-fictional people as characters.)

Random monthly trivia about me, updated for September 2019: Though I'm a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey fan, I've never ice skated. I will try it someday, though!

Some information about me as a writer and some notes about my writing:

Background: I do not write fiction for a living, and until I decided to get involved with this website, I didn't really write any fiction at all. Until 2009, my writing experience was pretty much limited to writing non-fiction stories, features, and politically related opinion pieces. However, after taking an immediate liking to Nickelodeon's The Penguins of Madagascar cartoon in April 2009, my Internet searches related to the show in the weeks that followed eventually led me here and gave me my first exposure to the concept of fan fiction. It took watching only twenty-two episodes of The Penguins of Madagascar before I began to think that I might be able to develop some stories of my own, figuring that my skills as a non-fiction writer would help me come up with material and include some real-life elements in it. I acted on these thoughts by signing up for an account in July 2009, and before I knew it, I had written and published my first fanfic, I Can't Set Foot in Denmark.

After publishing nineteen Penguins of Madagascar works here from 2009 to 2015, I published my first Zootopia work, Zootopia Scenes and Shorts, in August and September 2016. I started writing Zootopia fan fiction just one week after watching the movie.

In June 2017, I published Off the Shelf, my twenty-first work for The Penguins of Madagascar (the twentieth to be published on FanFiction.net). After nearly eight years of writing Penguins of Madagascar fanfics, Off the Shelf is my final planned work in the fandom.

My approach to writing: Fan fiction, by its very nature, is written by authors as a labor of love. However, I believe in approaching it with as much seriousness, dedication, and pride as if I were writing non-fiction or being paid for my work. I have a healthy obsession with quality and accuracy and would consider myself to be at least moderately prescriptivist, especially as I learn new things. I own copies of the sixteenth and seventeenth editions of The Chicago Manual of Style, which I often refer to when writing and editing. But through it all, though I may be my own biggest critic and an occasional Monday-morning quarterback, I find that I am also a fan of my work and that I can surprise even myself sometimes.

When it comes to publishing, I differ from most fan fiction authors in that my full-length stories are not published as "works in progress," as I personally prefer to fully complete my stories behind the scenes before publishing any part of them. This is for two main reasons: (1) because I often write the scenes of my stories out of sequence, just as a movie is typically not filmed in the same order in which its scenes will eventually be placed; (2) because it allows me to ensure that the story as a whole works well and that it is without plot holes, errors, confusing content, or ideas I would have wished I had been able to include earlier. Once a story is complete, I then publish it on a chapter-by-chapter basis, most often by publishing one chapter every two days. On average, it takes between a few weeks and a few months to write a full-length story.

As for content, I do not write material that I would object to the characters actually experiencing. Though I have written of difficult and emotional situations, there are always resolutions to these situations, with friendship, trust, love, and/or brotherhood usually playing a role in the resolution. I don't write sex scenes. Even fictional characters deserve privacy. I have no interest in slash pairings.

My favorite work: My favorite among the fanfics I have written is my 2012 story Beyond DNA. I sometimes think that all the fan fiction work I did prior to writing the story was just practice to allow me to write it. The father-daughter relationship between Skipper and MaryRose, although I had the freedom to create it any way I wanted, still touches me whenever I think about it. Although the two stories are unrelated, Beyond DNA can be seen as having a similarity with my 2010 fanfic Injustice: the message that life is a beautiful thing and that all children deserve love. I have received more feedback in support of a sequel to Beyond DNA than any other story, and a short one, Operation: Fluffy Pink Sugar, was published on June 14, 2015.

Your feedback and support: I would like to thank all who have taken the time to read my stories, especially those who have posted reviews on them. A thorough review is the best payment I can get for writing fan fiction. I appreciate your support.

Find a typo or some other error in one of my stories? Whether big or small, please let me know about it. Unless it is something I did intentionally, I will likely edit the story to correct it.

If you enjoy one of my stories, please consider telling a friend about it or sharing a link on social media. FanFiction.net makes it easy to post links to websites like Facebook and Twitter with the "Share" button at the bottom of each chapter.

A special thank you to Fanpop's JediPenguin16 for drawing the artwork used as the cover image of A Skilene-Filled September. You can find the un-cropped version on Fanpop.

THE LATEST ON MY FAN FICTION WORK

CURRENT WRITING AND PUBLISHING STATUS (7/12/19): The next two fanfics I publish will be short, non-Zootopia one-shots: one for the TV show Mr. Bean and one for the movie The Fox and the Hound. Both should be published soon. After, there will be a multi-chapter Zootopia story, but I have a lot more work to do on it first, so it won't be published until later this year, possibly longer.

Editing project: Since 2013, I have slowly been making mostly minor edits to my previously published works. I made the decision to edit in 2012 in order to better bring my older works into line with more recent practices and for general improvement. Although this editing means that some words will be added to, changed in, and cut from original versions (among other things), nothing important to any of the plots will be changing. Once a story is edited, an edit date will be added in brackets at the end of it.

As of March 11, 2018, the following stories have been edited: I Can't Set Foot in Denmark (March 11, 2018); Hepatic Hero (January 26, 2018); Paths Unknown (September 8, 2017); A Chance Encounter (August 24, 2017); "Mad, Mad Rico Blue" (August 10, 2017); Beyond DNA (October 13, 2015); Operation: Short Stories (December 31, 2013).

The following work is currently being edited one chapter at a time: A Skilene-Filled September (editing started November 2015)

The following stories have not yet been edited as part of this project but have had minor tweaks and/or typo corrections after publication: Injustice (September 26, 2012); One Hundred Days of Drabbles: Double Time! (September 25, 2011); Election Day (January 19, 2011); Freedom Isn't Free (August 28, 2010); Operation: Home Sweet Home (August 27, 2010); Paging Doctor Skipper (April 27, 2010); One Hundred Days of Drabbles (April 25, 2010)

Any changes made to new stories (those published beginning in 2015) will not be reported in this section, and these stories will have only the edit date in brackets to show that they were changed.

Word counts for stories published from 2009 to 2012, except those that have been fully edited, have been determined to be slightly higher than they actually are due to how the FanFiction.net system processes certain formatting changes made in Doc Manager (such as adding line dividers and single line breaks). These counts will be corrected in the future by remaking the formatting changes in a different way. Most authors won't bother to do this, but I like accuracy.

Replies to anonymous reviewers (and to reviewers not accepting PMs): None at this time. Messages I have for reviewers I cannot otherwise reach I will post here for up to thirty days.

Writing quotes

"I hate writing, I love having written."—Dorothy Parker

"I spent all morning putting in a comma and all afternoon taking it out."—Oscar Wilde

"Our Founding Fathers, here in this country, brought about the only true revolution that has ever taken place in man's history. Every other revolution simply exchanged one set of rulers for another set of rulers. But only here did that little band of men so advanced beyond their time that the world has never seen their like since, evolve the idea that you and I have within ourselves the God-given right and the ability to determine our own destiny. But freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. The only way they can inherit the freedom we have known is if we fight for it, protect it, defend it, and then hand it to them with the well-taught lessons of how they in their lifetime must do the same. And if you and I don't do this, then you and I may well spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it once was like in America when men were free."—Ronald Reagan, March 30, 1961

"The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so."—Ronald Reagan, October 27, 1964

Universal disclaimer: Due to this website being exclusively composed of fan fiction writings, I feel that it is unnecessary to post a disclaimer atop all my fanfics because I believe that the nature of this website implies such writings are nothing but works of fan fiction. However, I hereby state the following to serve as a universal disclaimer for all my writings here related to The Penguins of Madagascar and Zootopia: I, the FanFiction.net user GrandOldPenguin, do not own the television show The Penguins of Madagascar or the movie Zootopia or any of their characters; all rights to said show's and said movie's characters are held by their creators. While the plots of my fan fiction stories are of my own invention, the characters involved within them, unless otherwise specified or reasonably implied, I do not own.
