Well, hey there!

No, my name is not Emilia, it's Gemma.

My username has a bit of a backstory, so sit tight for a moment while I explain!

Emilia is a female character in William Shakespeare's play "The Tragedy of Othello", and -I think- the only character he's ever written that doesn't reflect an inherent sexism, which -to be fair to the guy- is expected within Shakespeare's era. To me, Emilia is the true feminist of Shakespeare's works: she's witty, subversive, defiant and outspoken. Emilia even talks about how women get such a bad lot in life, and how they are actually really smart and deserve better.

And, when Emilia's friend Desdemona is all "Oh my God I'd never betray my husband I am the perfect wife" Emilia is literally like "Dude I would so screw my husband over if it made him king". Also, Emilia explicitly speaks out against her husband and tells everyone that he lied, to try and save her best friend's life. That may not sound like much, except that back in those days women simply didn't ever speak out against their husband. It wasn't even an option for women- they were ideally a servant to their husband. To defy your gendered expectations was a criminal act: there is a reason Lady Macbeth "commits suicide" after she begins to control and manipulate her husband, and seeks power to which she is not "entitled". (I can rabbit on about this for hours...). So the fact that Emilia manages to exist beyond the strict, gendered expectations of Shakespeare's era, without being constructed as a villain, in very very cool and awesome.

So Emilia's really quite outspoken and feminist, and she's someone I would absolutely love to have tea with. 1) because I feel like she would have heaps of cool stuff to say, and 2) because I love tea.

Also, I happen to know quite a bit about Shakespeare and feminist-y stuff, so if you're ever in need of someone to talk/ask about Shakespeare with, I am here to chat!

Anyway, about me:

I'm 17, Australian, an INFJ and really into lots of things, including athletics (like track running), hockey, writing, and plenty of other awesome stuff. Message me to chat, I'm always keen- even if I am a total introvert. And, you can find me on tumblr!
