How does one handle pure and utter joy after years of pain and loneliness? Patrick is about to find out. T for now, but may venture later into M.

AU after 'Black Hearts'. Lisbon moves to DC, Jane has a hard time adjusting, and everyone else makes a lot of phone calls.

"Even more painful was the realization that she was correct in her accusations. And that if he lost her now, it was no one's fault but his own. Not Red John's, just his. A flawed man, too scared to cross the distance that had bridged them for so long."

'Jane squeezed her fingers. "Anxious to get going?" he murmured. "We're just lucky some idiot didn't sneak on board and disrupt proceedings. I hear the TSA really frowns on that sort of thing."'

6x19 Tag - "Lisbon's words - 'he makes a point of always being there for me'. She might as well have said the rest of it out loud, too - 'you aren't.'"

'There were several moment of hesitation before she opened the wooden door. Her eye make-up was smudged, like she had swiped at her eyes a fair few times. "Who's leaving who now?" he asked without preamble.'

"He was coming alive again, almost before her eyes, and it was all she could do not to stare."

A quiet evening at the CBI, and a stolen moment.

In the future, Jane and Lisbon get a good night's sleep. And something more along the way. It's finally Jane/Lisbon shippy even if I had to beat in their skulls with a crowbar. Updated again. Lisbon thinks she has the flu... but that's not why she's in the bathroom this morning. As she, Jane, and half the building find out.

"It had been interesting, watching her try to avoid her feelings for him for the past several years. He, however, was much more pragmatic in these situations. He was probably better at hiding his emotions than she was, but he certainly hadn't hidden them from himself. " A birthday gift for CharmingNotDarling

"We're working toward it though, right? So I haven't missed anything?" Basically how the second half of Season Four brings Jane and Lisbon closer together.

She tells herself later that she had no other choice, but the reality of the situation is that she's had many choices when it comes to Jane, and somehow every single one she picks leads her right back to him.

5x04 Tag "She was still staring at the sign when Jane came around to open her door. He held out a hand. "Coming? You're going to love this, I promise." He had a childlike innocence around him, wanting to give her a surprise he thought she'd enjoy. And it was impossible to resist him."

5x03 Tag – "She fixed him with a stare that she usually reserved for lying suspects that had pushed her buttons in one way or another. "For one, I didn't go on a date." He noted the contracted denial. "And for another, even if I did, it's none of your damn business." Really, how did you think Jane was going to react to Lisbon's news?

Set post 4x24. "He realized anew what his leaving had done to her. She was the same beautiful Lisbon, but different. She had a new fragility around her, like she was nearly ready to shatter. Her cheekbones were hollowed; her collarbone would cut glass. In a moment, he understood: he had broken her heart. He was still breaking her heart."

He had used the phrase so often, flippantly as it applied to others. Now they stood forehead to forehead, eyes closed. He infused the words with everything he felt for her . . .
