Author has written 2 stories for Mythology, and X-overs. Hello HELLO!! I'm not really new to this site, but this is the first time I've ever actually updated my profile. In a way, this is a bit inspired by Dibsthe1 (I love her fics XD) 'cause I get REALLY bored and decide to think a bit too seriously about Dib's life. (I'm not a stalker XD) I've actually read Dibsthe1's profile intro (or whatever you call it) a couple times already, and I really do agree with her. All that stuff about Dib being beaten up by Gaz and laughed at by his "fanz" is deffinately true, no matter how much anyone may what to wish it weren't true (or happy it IS true in some cases, as I've come to find out). Anyway, to the thought I came up with. (just last night actually) Not to brag to people here, but I've noticed I seem to be getting better at noticing what people feel, possibly know, that sorta thing, and so I decided to think about Dib's life. (according to both fics AND the show) So here goes. In my mind, Dib has three choices to chose from for a way of life; what society wants, his family wants, and what he himself wants. Obviously, society is never a good way to go, and he actually knows that, unlike everyone else. From his P.O.V., he seems to think that his world is worth saving, but everyone he meets seem to prove him wrong with 100% success. With his choices from his family, however, he still doesn't go along with it, but it's about 10 times harder not to follow what his dad expects from him. Gaz doesn't tell him what he can and can't do, but that's not how she "works", i guess is how you could put it. Gaz is controlling (obviously) Dib, or at least trying to, through threats and her seemingly never ending anger and hatred toward ANYONE in that house except, it seems, Membrane. Cudos (spelling?) to a book I've read, it really made me think of Dib's life, and how Gaz may be thinking. It was called Controlling People: How to Understand and Deal with People Who Try to Control You. It basically said that someone who is trying to control someone else is really trying to get a hold on THEMSELVES. In other words, what Gaz is most likely trying to do (possibly sub-conciously) is get ahold of her own reality that she wants, whether Dib likes it or not. What could've caused that in Gaz? Well, there's the lack of emotional support over-all in the family, and no father-figure either. Dib is pretty much filling those roles, but Gaz is in complete denial that Dib is trying to help her. (or just refuses to acknowledge it all together) WOAH, huge side track, huh? But I think all that made me understand what may be going on in that family if it were ever to be a real-life family. As long as I'm on the subject of people controlling others in the family, I switch my sights to the one and only Prof. Membrane. The man without whom "the world would fall into chaos". But what happens if he was forced to stay in the house with his kids, like the average dad? I decided to think about that. (I think when I'm bored) In the words of Nny, "One extreme to the other", deffinately describes this situation. Membrane seems to be the controlling type, however controlled he seems now. If he were to be forced to live in his house normally, this control would almost be literally ripped from his mind, causing what I think would happen, his mind mentally would split in half. Desperate to look for control, he would most likely "target" Dib, and wa-la, his life is worse then it had been. How do I know he'd most likely "target" Dib? 'Cause he seems to chose favorites. For example, ever notice how he treats Dib apart from Gaz? In one scene, when Gaz mentions Dib is in the Overworld Netherworld, Membrane pats her on her head and says, "That's my funny child!" However, Dib can say the EXACT same thing, and what's his response? "My poor insane son", while Membrane shakes his head in pure disappointment. This may actually be due to the whole "older siblings watch younger siblings" thing, or at least that's how it's mentioned in many fics. If Membrane were to live in his own house for awhile, a day or a month, he would be how my mom would explain, "kiss the ground he walks on" type of person. Most likely, he would expect Dib to do everything for him, and the sad part is, Dib usually would anyway. (at least in the show) This may actually make Gaz's already bad attitude WORSE, sinces Gaz's attitude would be reinforced by the way Membrane would most likely treat her, and basically encourage her to be pampered and expect everything in life will be easy, while Dib, on the other hand, seems to be told that he's not accepted by his family OR society untill he goes with what they want him to do. On to my last point (remember, way back in the beginning?). Dib deffinately defies what the over-all society would probably call "logic". What he seems to believe is that he can do anything he sets his mind to, even if his dad thinks it's sad and "insane". (A couple days after original thought) I would actually like to add something to Gaz's issue. Ever wonder why she constintly (I think I spelled that wrong) playing her game all the time? I thought about that, and I think it's because she can control the game, thus, she's happy. She can't control Dib, and that's usually what irritates her. Which leads me to believe she is like Membrane-controls Dib with mental insults. So, I'm really not too sure how to close this, so I guess I'll just say, that's how I feel about Dib's whole family issue. On a professional level (I'm not a professional), I probably missed a lot of little details, but this is all I could come up with. I'd like to see how you people reacte to this. Seriously, what do you think? READ AND REVIEW (if you can, I'm just that new to this site) |
