Sonny glances back over his shoulder, and everything - the biting cold, the howl of the wind, the weather-beaten wood beneath his hands - seems to fade into the distance. All he can see is the pool of blood, standing out vivid crimson against the thin coating of snow on the floor. Clay coughs, spits out another mouthful of blood, and whispers, "I think something's wrong with me."

Clay is presumed to be killed in action while on a mission in Cambodia. The team has to find a way to cope with their loss and return to the field or risk being separated. A year later a video surfaces that turns their world upside down.

Sonny rolled onto his side, coughing, dry heaving, sucking in as much oxygen as he possibly could, and saw what he'd been seeing in his nightmares ever since Clay had been taken; Clay, thrashing around in a pool of his own blood like a wounded, rabid animal. Dying.

The door opens again and this time he knows it's time. He rises up, determined to meet his executioners on his feet. He forces his legs to steady and tilts his chin a little higher. If they want to hang a Navy SEAL then a Navy SEAL they will get to the very end.

While recovering from a minor injury, Clay gets assigned to serve as interpreter for Romeo in rural Africa, with Kairos also along as EOD. When shit hits the fan and Spenser gets left behind, it's up to Summer to negotiate an uneasy truce between Bravo and Romeo - at least for long enough to get Clay back home alive.
