Anna straightened, clenching and unclenching her fists in the cold. The intruders lay still in the dark, their faces covered mercifully with light cloths. Now that the most unpleasant of the business was behind them, the scrubbing could begin. Thinking balefully of the blood-spattered kitchen, she sighed as she and Cicero took up a pair of oak buckets and headed for the well.

Simcoe awoke with a start, his heart thudding a forceful tattoo in his ears. Beyond the howling of the wind and the creaking of the settling house, he was certain he'd heard something unnatural.

The captain panted, knife still in hand. The intruder fell to the floor with a dull thud. Anna, stilled by shock, watched as Simcoe took a seat at the table, his night shirt blooming with crimson beneath a jagged slash in the linen. He pulled a handkerchief from the pocket of his breeches and wiped the blood from his eyes as he considered her.
