Jack loved the look of terror in Tooth's eyes, the horror in Sandy's, the anger in Bunny's and the sorrow in North's. Even after becoming a Guardian, Jack still feels alone and unloved. The only other person who could possibly understand that kind of loneliness is the one that captured Jack and seeks to destroy him.

"If you don't do as I say, I will kill the guardians right in front of you." Pitch said with a sadistic grin, leaving Jack no choice but to unwillingly side with him. Now the guardians, they think their newest member has betrayed them.

22 years have passed since the defeat of Pitch. Jack lives alone, touch-starved, with only the company of a solitary Nightmare. He is set on a path that will lead him to unexpected relationships, draw the attention of the Guardians to new villains, and challenge Jack's notion of what it is to be good, evil, and what it means to live in the shadows. Pitch decided that he was going to have a little one-on-one time with a certain Guardian. After five years of seclusion to his underground home, the Nightmare King had started to become quite bored of his dark surroundings.
