Valentine's return to health and love is slow but Guy's remorse and true love slowly win her back to him. We hear the story of the last girl of 1000 Days and how sadly that ended. Valentine's own time is at an end and she must think about her options - to leave and be free or remain the marquis' mistress of her own choosing?

Valentine shares her attentions with father and son but Alain is not happy and in a vile show of power allows his friends to indulge their animal desires with her. She is brutalised by them. But Guy rescues her, taking her home at last. But she is again pregnant and this time shame and despair led her to attempt to take her life, this time Mathilde cannot forgive the marquis

Valentine is sent to one of the farms belonging to the Chateau where she is to work as a peasant girl. She finds friendship and happiness hovers nearby- she thinks less of Guy. The farmer Bernard takes her for his lover and is kind to her. But his son, Alain demands Valentine as his 21st birthday present.

Valentine becomes aware that her bonded time is moving on. The marquis turns to cruelty and voyeurism commanding Valentine to 'entertain' the Parisian gardeners. She grows to hate him as he delights in her humiliation. Unsatisfied by her 'performance' he sends her away to work on a farm belonging to the estate. Her love for him has died.

We see into Guy's heart while he is away from Valentine and learn more about who he really is. On his return he is distressed by Valentine's health but is determined to renew his devotions with a view to siring a child. He does not know what she has suffered and how unready she is for such a task. He allows a month for her to fall pregnant. She fails.

Valentine's happiness after the ball is fleeting as Guy sets off for Prince Alexei's wedding without her. She is heart broken, then devastated to find she is pregnant, but who is the father? Wracked with guilt she seeks advice from the priest. She falls terribly ill, through guilt and desperation and a broken heart, Mathilde believes. The baby is lost and she is terribly weakened.

Having pleased the marquis' friends, Valentine attends the ball and has a wonderful evening. She is kind to Monsieur Artois, dances with the marquis' friends and the marquis. Even the dowager finds herself entranced by Valentine and the sight of her in the arms of her beloved son.

Valentine spends time obliging Guy's two other friends, the Prince and Duke of Burgundy. She is less than happy about this but as the marquis has made it clear she will not attend the ball unless she 'pleases' his friends she does her best. Expensive jewels are only part of her reward...

The Marquis' friends arrive for a month of hunting and friendship. They convince Guy to play cards for the pleasure of a day or night with Valentine. Reluctantly he agrees. After all, as young men they used to share everything and Valentine is only his mistress. If she pleases his friends will he let her go to the ball?

Guy's mother Elise appears and tells Valentine the story behind her contract, how the 1000 days came to occur. Guy and Valentine's bond grows, which makes Elise more uncomfortable and so she hatches a plan.

Valentine awakes alone and fearful after her first night with the marquis. But she need not be scared as she has more than pleased him. Now he commits the 'bonding act', sealing their bargain for 1000 days. But is it just a contract between master and mistress, or does it mean more?

After an anxious wait, and lessons to improve everything about her, Valentine finally has her 'date' with the marquis. He enjoys himself fully and she hopes in giving herself to him that she has pleased him enough not to break the 1000 days contract.
