October 9, 2002: I've removed all fanfiction stories archived at ff.net, NC-17 and otherwise, in protest against arbitrary censorship. Creativity does not always come in family-values packages. Nor are moral standards universal. The anti-civil liberties Christian Right has insinuated its definition of "morality" into mainstream culture so far that people are more willing to accept the silencing of diverse voices, in the name of "decency" or "protecting children" than they are willing to allow a diversity of opinions flourish and engage them critically. ff.net has fallen prey to the same mentality, choosing to view the complaints against NC-17 fiction as representative of mainstream views, and sweeping away all NC-17 fiction without consideration of the actual merits of stories so labeled.

As an author of both NC-17 and PG-13 stories, I can no more keep some of my work here when the rest is unwelcome, than I could ever patronize a bar or club where blacks, Jews, or homosexuals were excluded as "undesirables". To play along with discrimination and intolerance is to condone them.
