I'm a 17 year old American student studying undergraduate level math and economics. I also maintain avid side-interests in history, literature, philosophy, and physics. You may be wondering why I'm interested in fanfiction. Actually, you probably aren't, but I'll tell you anyway. About a year ago, I got introduced to Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality and My Immortal (talk about a study in contrasts!). Since then, I've slowly begun dipping my toes into the brackish pool of fanfiction. Particularly after getting to college, I found myself with a good amount of free time, and, like such things often happen, I developed an unhealthy interest in Avatar: the Last Airbender and Harry Potter fanfiction. After I discovered the good folks over at Dark Lord Potter and actually started reading high quality fics, the rabid idea bunny hasn't left me alone for a good while now. Apart from the works of Rowling and the Avatar guys, I particularly like those of Terry Pratchett, J.R.R. Tolkien, and George R. R. Martin. Unlike with the former two, I won't dirty the latter three fandoms with my ideas since, frankly, I would be hard-pressed to match Martin's vision, Tolkien's depth, or Pratchett's sheer whimsy. At least I have a hope of building something new on the fantastic and ill-explored Harry Potter and Avatar universes. Now for a summary of the more likely ideas I'm mulling over. Titles, of course, are provisional, but the premises are set. Most of these have limited appeal, so I'll be focusing on the "epic-scale" ideas ("Morning and Evening Star" and "Legacy of the Fire Lords"). All of the Harry Potter ideas are in the same continuity. I have a fairly complex historical backstory for Magical Europe and America, in addition to a vaguer one for the rest of the world. Suffice it to say that stuff diverges a good deal from Muggle history, but, as Rowling would say, they "feed off each other." 100% canon-compliant, at least until Rowling starts to reveal more random stuff on Pottermore. Harry Potter Ideas 1. "The Morning and the Evening Star" The Muggle world is falling apart at the seams. Hate, poverty, and stagnation. Despair. It's been that way since before Roland Prince could remember. And now the chaos is spreading to the Wizarding World. On the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of Voldemort's defeat, things look darker than ever, in Britain and worldwide. Only this time the problem can't be fixed by killing one Dark Lord. It's inherent in the system and, seemingly, coming to an inevitable head. One likely beyond the control of Head Auror Potter, Minister Malfoy, and other world leaders. At least, that's what the young diplomat thought, until he got swept into a world of secret societies and international intrigue. Rose/Scorpius marriage in the background, among other pairings. Romance is not a focus (for a while). Prince is the main viewpoint character, but the cast is an ensemble. 2. "The Puissant Feats of one Sir Balthasar, called Malefoi" What kind of knight would choose the name "of bad faith"? A badass trickster hero, that's who. Follow Balthasar son of Thierry from his humble origins to the rough-and-tumble world of 13th century French politics. Learn the history of the founder of the House of Malfoy, as told by a rather unreliable bard. And do we detect a hint of magic? Translated from Berenguer de Beaudiez's Middle French by Lord Titus Malfoy, c. 1920. It's mostly humor, but there's a plot. Expect the Muggle author and the translator to be characters in their own right. This is the closest I'm ever coming to emulating Pratchett or Cervantes. Note: Titus Malfoy is (very roughly) a magical Winston Churchill, in all his snarkily racist glory. And he's Draco's great-granddad. Hey, the Malfoys need some reason to be proud, right? To clear up concerns, there are no British Lords after 1932 (complicated reasons why). 3. Anastasia, as set in the Harry Potter universe. Don't expect all of the plot points to go the same (it's technically consistent with all historical evidence). Bartok is a Danubian (Hungarian) bat animagus. Set after the War of Montmorency's Nose and the fall of Rasputin. Loosely parallels the plot of the movie, but character motivations differ to correspond to the Harry Potter setting. Why? It struck me as a cool idea, and it seemed like the only Disney movie we could adapt into Harry Potter without extreme stupidity. Also real men wear pink. Avatar: the Last Airbender Ideas 1. "Legacy of the Fire Lords" AU: Azula hesitates a few seconds before going to taunt Zuko about Azulon's sentence. In those few seconds, she notices her mother's soft footsteps down the hallway and decides against it, for the moment. As a result, Ursa never finds out about the decree, and Ozai never gets the chance to trade Zuko's life for the Dragon Throne. When Ozai goes to kill Zuko in the night, Azulon's agents prevent him from firing the blow, he is banished, and Iroh, broken and humbled by the death of his son, gets custody of Ursa, Zuko, and Azula. Six years later, the war is still raging. The Avatar is discovered in the Southern ice. Will he fulfill his destiny of overthrowing Fire Lord Iroh and restoring balance to the world? At what cost? Note: It's not an evil!Iroh story, though it isn't necessarily canon!Iroh either. Personalities are still very recognizable, since we've only had six years for things to diverge. Motivations, relationships, and personal philosophy will shift a little more. I'll answer all lingering questions in the story (e.g. why is there a war if Iroh is Fire Lord, post Spirit World visit?). Think of it as a deconstruction of balance, karma, and the Avatar's role. 2. The founding of the Order of the White Lotus. There's an evil Avatar, and stuff happens. Not the most fleshed-out idea. 3. "Scared Straight: Avatar Edition" Prison Bumi/Ozai/Iroh is here to SCARE YOU STRAIGHT. Pretty much self-explanatory. Based on Prison Mike in "The Office" and, obviously, the "Scared Straight" series on TV. Won't be going into the most obvious one (Azula) since I don't particularly enjoy extended dead baby (or mentally ill teenager) comedy routines. I find them distasteful. |
