Poll: What is the easiest story to write fanfics about? Vote Now! |
![]() Hey! I decided I'd join this site because I've been reading stories on here for about 6 years, and dropping anonymous reviews, which are probably rather annoying, so... I have written several short fanfics for Lord of the Rings, Sherlock Holmes, and Harry Potter, but I don't think I'll be posting them anytime soon - they are several years old and my writing style has changed enormously in the past few years. I also have an unfortunate injury and tendonitis in my wrist and arms that impedes my ability to type or write more than a few sentences a day. I will however leave reviews and favorite stories... I admit I am much better at critiquing than conceptualizing ideas :) Hopefully someday I'll add some of my own! I have found, in my own experience of writing and reading other fanfics, that writing in the LOTR and SH fandoms is much harder than doing so with HP. I find that most writers have tried to romanticize the main characters (Frodo and Legolas among others in LOTR, and Holmes in SH), although they were originally written without any love interest - using those examples: Frodo is slightly odd, like Bilbo - their hearts lay with adventure, not women; Legolas is a warrior, and even if he did have a love interest (the books make it obvious he did not), it would not be a human woman (there were only three such mixed relationships in the history of elves and men); Holmes is described as having absolutely no interest in women other than Irene Adler, and that interest was not romantic - rather, she intrigued him solely because she was the only woman who had ever bested him. Besides adding romantic inclinations that usually make no sense (without making the book and movie characters completely OOC), there are not too many places to take the fandom of LOTR. Those of us who are (admit it) obsessed can't resist doing something, of course, but there aren't too many roads to take, as Tolkien himself covered them quite well (The Silmarillion, the Appendices, his other writings relating to Arda). I admit to having a peculiar weakness for well written OCs, Tenth Walkers, or even Mary Sues, the latter mainly because (as the writers themselves), we would love to be that character. The main problem with the Holmes fandom is, I believe, the same problem I had when attempting to write in it - Doyle wrote him as an extremely complex character, with no obvious feeling, an unknown childhood, and the uncanny ability to deduce almost everything about a person from a glance at them and/or their surroundings, along with an obvious touch of cockiness and sarcasm. Attempting to write him as that character is extremely hard, as is making a case for him to solve (from his deductions) that is not obvious to the readers as well. Therefore, we turn to OCs, using Robert Downey Jr's version of Holmes (the best version yet, with the exception of his apparent love of Irene), or slash stories of him and Watson (I am not going to put myself in that age-old argument on either side here -message me if you want my opinion), which are, again, OOC for a man who showed no emotion. If you can't already tell, I babble rather a lot on these subjects because I have been familiar with them for MANY years, but now I am going to stop :) I'll say a few things about me (as cut and dry as possible), and sign off. About me... well, I am female, and 18 years old. I have played the violin for most of my life, and own ponies, horses, cats, and a dog. I would love to be an actress, as I have always felt I had the ability, but don't have the time or money to put into such a long shot. I like country, alternative, rock, and pop music, though country is my first love. I am an avid reader, and am obsessed with Lord of the Rings and Sherlock Holmes, and to a slightly lesser degree, Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia. I watch 5 TV shows, 4 of them almost weekly: Supernatural, Castle, NCIS, NCIS:LA, and The Mentalist, and when I was younger I fell in love with Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Charmed, Stargate SG1, and Stargate Atlantis. I haven't ever watched many movies, and never bought any (as I usually get bored by watching them more than once), though I would like to have the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition (the whole trilogy) and Sherlock Holmes (2009 version) as they are AWESOME. I despise Twilight (books and movies)... feel free to ask me why, but I am not going to go on a tirade here :) My favorite actors are Robert Downey Jr (I fell in love with him 9 years ago), Kevin Spacey, Johnny Depp, Viggo Mortensen, Karl Urban, David Wenham, and Jude Law. Favorite actresses include Cate Blanchett, Miranda Otto, and Liv Tyler (all three for obvious reasons if one is familiar with LOTR). My biggest inspiration in life comes from my mom, and I live largely in the world of fantasy, numbers, and music (in other words, I'm a nerd). Some favorite quotes include the following (I have quite a few from LOTR and HP as well, but I'll have to search for the exact quotes in the books later): "Onen i-estel edain. U-chebin estel anim." - "The Lord of the Rings:The Return of the King Appendix: The Story of Aragorn and Arwen" Watson: "Get that thing out of my face." "There's only one case that intrigues me at the present: The curious case of Mrs. Hudson, the absentee landlady. I've been studying her comings and goings. They appear most... sinister." - Sherlock Holmes, "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) Mrs. Hudson: "He's killed the dog. Again." "There's nothing of interest to me out there, on earth, at all." - Sherlock Holmes, "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) "I, using musical theory, have created order out of chaos." - Sherlock Holmes, "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) Flora (palm reader): "M for Mary, for marriage - oh, you will be married." "It's a matter of professional integrity! No girl wants to marry a doctor who can't tell if a man's dead or not." - Sherlock Holmes, "Sherlock Holmes (2009) If you have ever pushed on a door that said pull or vise versa copy this into your profile If you have ever had a mad laughing fit for absolutely no reason, copy and paste this into your profile If you have ever run into a door, copy this into your profile If you have ever been called a human dictionary/thesaurus/calculator/encyclopaedia/general mine of pointless information, copy this to your profile |
