According to conversations he was not meant to hear, the right man has to be perfect for Eponine but also right for the family she has made with her siblings. Gavroche looks to her friends to pick the right guy...if only Enjolras would stop annoying him about homework.

When Éponine and Enjolras come to call one day, holding hands, Marius doesn't know if he's more unsettled by the fact that he knows for a fact that they're dead or that they seem to be romantically involved. He will either get to the bottom of this or...well, be rather confused by the whole thing.

Combeferre meets with a troubled friend, and they discuss the effect of suffering on hope and despair. Features a quote from Rousseau.

After his failure at the Barrière du Maine, Grantaire meets with Jehan to drink and reflect. Jehan rambles, quotes Rousseau, and manages to be a bit insightful.

Feuilly and his coworkers prepare for a strike, but the decision to join or not is difficult for one of the men. Inspired by a quote from Rousseau, and (although it stands alone as a fic) chronologically precedes "Beginning."

Bossuet finds himself homeless again, and worries that this may be an inopportune time for him to invade Joly's flat. Joly finds such worries ridiculous. Features a quote from Corneille.

Eleven-year-old Jean Prouvaire makes a protest on behalf of a beloved teacher who has given him hope. Inspired by a quote from Augustine, but also features a lot of Ezekiel quoting.

March 1830. Combeferre prepares to go to the theatre; Enjolras explains both immediate reasons and deeper ones why he cannot join him. Uses a quote from St. Augustine.

Jehan and Bahorel prepare for Lamarque's funeral, and disagree about the relative importance of reflection and action. Based on a quote from Dante.

Montparnasse's world is shaken to the core by Eponine and Gavroche's deaths on the barricade. Features a quote from Dante.

Courfeyrac, returning from a bit of a mission, comes across a scene in the Paris slums which the paladin inside him cannot stand to ignore. Features a quote from Juvenal. Warning for prostitution and some related slurs.

1814. Fourteen-year-old schoolboy Jérôme Bahorel stands up against tyranny in his Greek classroom, despite any consequences. Based on another Aeschylus quote, this one about tyranny. (Contains implied/mentioned school corporal punishment and a bit of language.)

(or: The One Where Combeferre and Stephen Maturin Bitch at Each Other About Politics) My longest fic in ages - and I feel like it's a borderline parody of my style. Crossover, Combeferre-centric, and almost nothing but dialogue about the politics of self-sacrifice. In which Stephen Maturin recognizes too much of himself in his brightest student.

Feuilly, in 1827, works his way through a difficult stretch without failing in his devotion to the call that has always given him strength. Based around a quote from Aeschylus: "His resolve is not to seem the bravest, but to be."

They were ready to die, but Paris wasn't ready to let them all go. Grantaire drags a grievously wounded Enjolras from the barricade and struggles to keep him alive as Enjolras slides between the living and the dead.
