Hi. A bit about me: I just stopped by mostly to read because I was interested to see if there were any Fallout fanfics, turns out it's a pretty popular category. I don't know if I'll write anything. I don't know enough about the Fallout universe, or the universes of any other games/shows/movies I'm interested in. I think you need to know a lot about the universe your story is based off first before you start writing about it. I learned about Fallout games only recently and I've never played the originals that the series spawned from. I've only completed Fallout 3 once and just started New Vegas. Same with Half-life. I was late to find out about them, long after people started losing hope in the final instalment of the series. And Elder Scroll, saw Skyrim in Tesco one day and bought it on impulse. I've never played any of the previous Elder Scrolls games and had no idea what to expect from it. It's good but I obviously don't get many references from previous games in the series so it's not likely I'd understand many Elder Scroll fanfics either. Suffice to say, I am not and never was much of a gamer and have only recently developed an interest in a handful of non-retro games. My likes: I do enjoy some movies and television shows though. Science fiction and comedy tend to be my favourites. I'll be looking for Red Dwarf fanfics so if by some slim chance anyone is actually reading this and knows any good ones, please let me know. I really enjoy when authors insert their own original characters into the fanfiction they're writing, provided they aren't cardboard cut-outs of themselves (unless they can be objective about inserting themselves and don't try to glorify themselves). Original characters that have strengths, weaknesses, up-sides, down-sides, perks and quirks and how they react to the universe they've been inserted into. I enjoy reading about that. Clever and comical narrative and imagery are always a pleasure too. But I think almost everyone would consider those good. My dislikes: I don't like to read anything that has character shipping. It's a pet peeve of mine, unless it's actually done well and isn't the central focus of the story in which case I can tolerate it. Nothing against it, I just personally don't like it. Or any romance for that matter. Again if it's enough that I can mostly ignore it then I find it tolerable. I also dislike fanfictions that capture the characters from the game/movie/show poorly. I also don't like self-inserts unless it's done exceptionally well. My work: 18/03/2012 I'm currently outlining the plot and characters of a potential Fallout 3 fanfic, Fallout 3 because it's the only Fallout game I ever completed, so I have set it in what is to me the familiar setting of the Capital Wasteland. It's simply to avoid too many errors in canon. Still, I'll probably end up unintentionally breaking canon here and there but I try to look things up when I'm unsure about something. It was an idea that was partially inspired by a dream I had years ago long before I found out about the Fallout series. In the dream some kind of nuclear weapon detonated in close vicinity to the town I was in and lots of the survivors got sick. The sickness looked, smelled and felt incredibly real and it provided me with some imaginative fuel. My real troubles begin when I attempt to convey the sheer magnitude of these horrific feelings and images, I'm not very good at it. It always ends up heavily watered down on paper. It is supposed to be a story of siblings, betrayal, horror, radiation, mutation, disease, sickness and sibling love (nothing dirty). Well, if anyone is reading this, any help and advice on describing images and more importantly feelings would be much appreciated. |
