In the years following the Eugenics Wars, private companies get their hands on equipment and research notes from the labs the augments were created. From there, they start genetics services. To make this legal, they bribe federal governments in the west to make it legal for genetic-engineering to take place. After that, Humanity ends being run by a privatized society, a free one.

The scrolls tell that 13 tribes left the birthplace of humanity on Kobol, 12 went one way and the other Earth went another only to lose all contact with their cousins. It is written that one day they would reunite but when they Earth meets their cousins it is not what they expected and it would cost both sides in blood. (Stargate SG1/Battlestar Galactica)

One of the main tropes of Stargate was that it could be happening Right Now, hidden from the public by government secrecy. This alternate universe assumes Stargate is happening in our world as we know it with a heavier dose of realism and harder sci fi. It tells the story of the SGC, Earth, and humanity in a universe full of aliens, technological wonders, and galactic conflict.

I have always wanted to see the Stargate program go public. This story begins just after the movie and ends just before the revelation. There are three major plotlines: the formation of the SGC, the difficulties faced by the people of Abydos, and Apophis. AU with mostly CC. A bit darker than the series, but not by much. Rated "T" for violence and some swearing.
