I am not a writer, this page is here for fic recommendations.

(this page is also in dire need of a rewrite)

I don't write, but I've always been an avid reader, and discovered fanfiction in 2007. I've probably spent more time reading than any other activity since then (it really is a very convenient source of reading material).

A small selection of those fics I've read, those I've liked enough to want to read them again sometime, I have on alert (currently 413).

The cream of the cream, the ones I might even pay for and recommend buying if it was published, because it's on par if not better than some stuff that has been published out there, I put here, as favourites.

Note: As a personnal rule, I only fav a finished story. If I've put your work on alert, and it's incomplete, it might end up here when you finish it (which is what happened with 'Nothing to Knight').

Fandoms:

Assassin's Creed, Code Geass, Criminal Minds, Death Note, Devil May Cry, Detective Conan, Dragon Age, Dragon Ball/Z, Elder Scroll series, Fast and the Furious, Final Fantasy VII (extended universe included), Final Fantasy VIII, Full Metal Alchemist, Harry Potter, Highlander, Hikaru no Go, Inception, Lord of the Rings/Hobbit/Silmarillion, Marvel/DC universe, Mass Effect, Naruto, One Piece, Shingeki no Kyojin, Star Trek (original & reboot), Star Wars/Jedi Apprentice, Suikoden V, Supernatural, Sword Art Online.

Stuff I tend to prefer:

- Proper grammar/syntax/spelling. I do have a tolerance for unperfect language (hell this page of mine is probably full of errors!), but there is a point of butchering a language past which I'll be put off. Fics that have few enough mistakes that I can tolerate it might still not end up being fav'd if it's too much.

- Canon compliance. I love AUs, "What if", Time Travel fics etc... but I do like it to be canon compliant (if it makes sense). If canon is modified in any way, it has to be for a good reason, and it has to serve a purpose, otherwise it will put me off (I might still read the fic, and even enjoy it, but it will count as bad point as far as I'm concerned).

- Characterisation. For the same reason as above, I prefer characterisation to be on spot. What is the point of using a character, if you're not using it? A character, more than it's name, is a personality. It can deviate from canon because of AU elements, but, just like canon alterations, it has to be for a reason and serve a purpose, otherwise it'll put me off (much more than canon alterations).

- Plot. I can read (and even enjoy) stories with few/no plot, but it's rare, and it has to have other exceptional qualities that make up for it.

- I am a much better public for angst than humour and romance. Meaning if I like a "humour" story, it has to be damn good, because it's a genre in which most fics usually disapoint me. On the other hand, I might be more lenient with an angst fic. If it's a romance, it has to be more than just a romance for me to enjoy it (otherwise it means it's damn good story)

- Also, I adore mysteries, but it tends to be a pass of fail thing for me. If I don't find it good enough, I just can't read it past a few chapters. Needless to say I've found the good ones to be exceedingly rare.

- I prefer long fics. I do read some short ones (sometimes), but the avid reader that I am wants moar ! Epic lengh stories have my love.

- While I do have favourite characters (hell, I even have some pairings I tend to prefer), I can read just about anything as long as the story is good.

- I dislike character bashing. Like a lot.

These are just a few of my tastes, no strict rules of course. Just so that you know what to expect from the stories I recommend.

Short reviews : (in progress)

A Square Peg in a Round Hole (Highlander/Stargate SG-1 - post Highlander series, post s7e3 SG-1):

Of all the characters in the Highlander universe, Methos is my favourite. Because he's not "just a guy" who happens to be unable to die (though he says the opposite; then again, he also says he's a liar), but a five thousand year-old being who can't even remember the beguining of his own existence, who can't even remember ever being mortal. I love fanfics that show this aspect of this character, and explore what it means exactly (because surely, you can't live or see the world the same way any other human does when you've lived this long; hell you don't see the world the same way between your childhood and your dying days when you're a plain mortal, try multiplying this a few hundred times).

Amongts all of those stories, this one is the best I've ever found (and I've searched, but in case I missed any, my PMs are open).

This is a third person narration from Metho's point of view. It shows the dichotomy between Methos's persona-of-the-moment, and the millenia-old being that wears it like a suit. It makes use of the Stargate SG-1 universe seen through the eyes of Methos to give a new perspective on civilisations, religions, wars, be they alien or good-old human (present and past).

My personal favourites? The debates between Methos and Jake O'Neil about Tealc (or: what is a god and a prophet); the shooting where Methos starts reciting an old Egyptian spell; When Jake asks Methos if he likes the food served in the base; the final scene (but I won't spoil). Oh and all the way long, you get to witness how Methos constantly manipulates absolutely everyone around him (friends, foes, aquitances, no one is spared, because the character's every interaction seem to always have a purpose, be it vague or precise, a mere "just in case" or a real plan of action).

My words won't do justice to this brilliant story anyway, so just go and read it!

They'll Burn Your Hearts Away (FF VII: CC - CC and before):

NOTE: It seems frooit has removed this story from this site for now, in order to edit/rewrite it. I can only encourage you to keep an eye on their ao3 page for updates (I can't imagine the story getting bad in the process)

This story tastes like hope and regret, like admiration, want and impossibles (unatainables?), like bright flashes of light in darkness; it's all greys and colours, nostalgia of the present time and grieving of what can't be. It leaves you hanging every single second, every single word of your read, and you love it so much that you stay for more, because you haven't even finished the story yet.

The writting is incredible, and gives the whole story a sort of watercolor feel. It tells much more than the words on the screen. These words, both very simple and incredibly subtle: they are just right. The style is a bit unusual, in a good way : it pulls you in, sucks you in, right from the start and all the way till the end.

You don't read Frooit's work: you can only live it.

Losing Mary (Essay):

This is not a story, but an essay on what makes an OFC a Mary Sue. Clear, humourous, concise and spot on. References mainly Mary Sues in the LotR fandom, but is interesting regardless of your fandom of interest.

All Fall Down (Highlander - sometime after the Horsemen, but before Ahriman):

A Methos-heavy ensemble genfic, with POV from the whole cast (including Greta). Methos' POV are the ones that made me laugh most, I just love this character's special brand of cynism, which the author has caught exceptionally well, in all it's subtlety.

Characterisation is perfect, the plot is totally in the spirit of the series (though this fic is, imho, much better than any episode of the Highlander series), it is also amusing and most of all suspenseful.

Not a single part of the fic feels boring or too much, it's entertaining from first to last word, and really catchy. Have I mentionned how characterisation was perfect for *all* characters, and how suspenseful the plot was? Yeah, sorry, it bears repeating.

What more to say? This is great. Go on, you won't regret the read.

The Consanguine Mind (Criminal Minds - AU):

Mistery is not a genre often seen in fanfiction. Even rarer are good mysteries. This one isn't one of them: it belongs to the exceptionally rare category of great mysteries.

Characterisation is amazing, the AU perfectly thought out (a single event: Reid never joined the team, which is explained and relevant to the plot), but the plot... this plot... I can promise you you will change your mind about the unsub's identity quite a few times before the end of the story, second guessing your guesses until it drives you crazy.

I take my hat off to the author, this is something I have rarely seen, both in fanfiction and original stories.

Note: I strongly advise you NOT to read the reviews for this fic, so as to avoid heavy spoilers.

Marie D Suesse And The Mystery New Pirate Age! Consanguine Mind (One Piece - AU?):

Yes, you've read the genre right : mystery & horror.

While it's about Mary Sues, it is an actual story instead of an essay. A sort of "show, don't tell" about Mary Sues. In any case, it's unlike most reading material that deals with or contains Mary Sues out there.

As the author points out : this is not a bashing, but rather a deconstruction. It features a Lemony Narrator. A real honest to God good one. It's something I've hardly ever seen done right (or at all), much to my chagrin. Yay for this fic!

This fic manages to be both horrific (duh!) and humorous. At the same time. Don't ask me, I still don't know how the author does it, they're amazing like that. And yes, if you've read this profile from the beginning, I did say that this fic is humorous, enough said.

Never dull, constantly surprising, entertaining *and* an incredibly insightfull reflexion on Mary Sues and good story-telling in general... What are you still doing here? Go read it already!
