My place in this fandom is a strange one. You see, I have never actually seen an episode of Supernatural. Now before you start screaming for the salt and matches or brushing up on your Latin, let me explain. This is what happened...

One day, in the not so distant past, I was browsing through a character inspiration board on Pinterest. I'm a writer in my spare time and was in search of a face to go with my latest character. The face I found was Jensen Ackles.

I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to character prep, so after finding that first pic I went looking for more. Lots more. That's when I stumbled upon Jared Padalecki. I didn't need his face at the moment, but the obvious chemistry between him and Jensen attracted me immediately. So, I started saving shots of them together as well. I mean, who knows when you're going to need another handsome face for some as yet unnamed/non-existent character, right?

But soon, just having pictures of the boys wasn't enough. (I did mention I'm a bit obsessive about character research, didn't I? Well, anyway...) I needed to see how they moved; listen to them talk; watch them interact. Enter YouTube. I started with fanvids of top "brotherly moments" followed by all of the Winchesters' death scenes, their hugs, their funniest moments, their saddest moments, and a host of other random clips. Dean had me crying on the very first video and from then on I was emotionally hooked. I was hooked for a second time when I happened upon some convention clips of Jensen and Jared. Rarely, have I ever been as impressed with the actors behind the characters as I was (and still am) with these two men.

All of that said, upon doing some research into the show as a potential new viewer I was extremely disturbed and disappointed by what I found. I knew almost immediately that I would never be able to actually watch these brothers I had unwittingly fallen in love with. The entire premise of the show is just... not for me. I don't "do" horror for one. Nor am I okay with excessive violence, gore, or sexual content. Add to that the occult elements of the show (which I, as a Christian, have SERIOUS issues with) along with the way angels and God Himself are portrayed (again, SERIOUS issues for me) and you have the makings of a problem.

I had become a fan without a show.

The solution? Fanfiction! A wonderful land where I can pick and chose what I "see". It allows me the luxury of spending time with the boys, while not allowing myself to be bombarded by things I am simply not okay with. In picking what I read, I aim for "bromance" tags/scenes/stories that focus on THEM and what they mean to each other. Not so much on hunting. I do make exceptions to this rule of thumb (ghosts don't bother me too much and there are a few monsters I can handle...) but am quick to bypass any content I feel uncomfortable with or simply move on to a different story.

Now, on a completely unrelated note (just in case any of you were wondering) I used 'L.H.' as my moniker when leaving guest reviews prior to setting up this account. Unfortunately for me, the username 'L.H.' was already taken so I have now become 'L.H. the 2nd'.
