![]() Author has written 13 stories for How to Train Your Dragon, and Wheel of Time. A few important notes. 0.1. A few lesser-known stories that deserve far more attention: (these are the REALLY lesser-known) Brothers of Night Unique plot, amazingly written. Deception and its sequels. Best read as one book with three parts because Deception on its own is a bit depressing. A great story. Dragons 101 A good story, sequel to another good story. And I'm not at all biased by having Beta'd the last nine or so chapters. 0.2. Things I wish weren't canon: Valka's assertion as to Toothless's age in HTTYD2. The entirety of HTTYD3 (aside from Light Furies, as I can do so much with those in my stories). 0.3. Some biographical information: Name: I like anonymity, thank you very much. It protects my fragile ego. In all seriousness, it doesn't matter that much, but I'd rather not reveal it to the masses. Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian, with some possible Norse / Italian descent. I'm not really sure, as I never cared enough to actually find out. Home country: America. Sadly, I've never even left to visit other places. Travel is not something I have been capable of. Age: Eighteen. Profession: College student, Majoring in Engineering. Material Engineering, to be precise. Writing is just something I picked up. Personal theme song: Blackheart, by Two Steps From Hell. I would say Dragon Rider, also by Two Steps From Hell, but Blackheart is just better, if not as fitting in title. 1. My biggest pet peeve is stories left unfinished for eternity. Therefore, I do not post anything until I have written the entire story, at least to a point where I would be happy posting it as is. I then proceed to post one chapter per week (roughly) in order to give myself time to read reviews and edit future chapters if needed. Therefore, no story of mine will ever be left incomplete. 2. Reviews are great. Even better is when the reviewer points out a problem that needs attention, whether it is one of plot, grammar, character, or anything else. Best of all is when the reviewer uses logic to explain WHY they think whatever it is needs fixing, and even offers suggestions on how to do it. I'm not guaranteeing that I will use those suggestions, but alternatives are always nice to have. 3. You see my long list of favorite stories? They have wildly varying statistics, but all are above a certain baseline of quality that makes them favorites of mine (or in a few rare cases just make me laugh, low-quality or not). Therefore, if you see a story in there with way fewer reviews, favorites, etc. than the rest, that doesn't mean it isn't as good, it just means it isn't as well known (or that it is darker than usual, as I have noticed a correlation between how dark something is and how popular. But that isn't the point.) 4. In regards to that list, please feel free to point out any HTTYD fanfiction you know of that you think should be on this list. I would love to find new stories of high quality! Though, I personally would prefer it if the rating stayed at T or below. Just my preferences there. 5. A note to authors attempting to work or build any type of magic into their stories. Magic can be well done in any story, but I have seen far too many botched attempts. It may help to keep in mind a few things. First off, don't use magic as a deus ex machina or plot bandaid. Second, everything should follow some sort of logic. Magic that breaks its own rules or has no rules (whether or not the rules are implicitly stated, or only implied doesn't matter, they need to exist) breaks the suspension of disbelief. To that end, also keep in mind that overpowered magic with no cost is unrealistic. The reader doesn't like a perfect hero. You can give someone power, but it needs to be a trade. Something has to happen (or have the possibility of happening) in addition to the intended result. As a typical example, take the 'turning Hiccup into a Night Fury' trope. This obviously involves magic of some kind (well, not for my story Starting Anew, but ignore that). Whether it is done well or not depends partly on what the author chose as the method and cost of said transformation. Keep in mind, costs don't have to be direct results of the use of the magic. Some examples of how this is done well, in a variety of ways, are as follows (I won't say anything about the methods/costs, because that would be major spoilers in some cases.) Magic in Moderation Hall of Fame (Name courtesy of Fizzlemcschnizzle): I Hear Him Scream Theft of Fire Lightning and Death Itself Dimmadreki A Recipe for Disaster Brothers of Night These stories all handle the methods and costs of the given magic extremely differently, and all do it in a way that encourages the suspension of disbelief. 6. Future works (Revised section, as the old one was getting really annoying to update): -A: Already written works that have not yet begun to post for whatever reason: Living Freely (Book three of the Living series). - Official Summary: Book 3 of the 'Living' series. The fractal scars should have been the first warning sign. His voluntary silence the second. Things are not as they seem, as Toothless involuntarily discovers. The rescue is on. Will begin posting once Living Anonymously has run its course. Of course, I'm probably (definitely, really) going to have to rewrite this one as thoroughly as Living Anonymously... -B: In progress works that are sequels/prequels/related to other works currently posting or posted already. Moving On (Prequel to Starting Anew, Tragedy.) -Official Summary: Disaster strikes, and Berk recovers. That's just how it works. But recovering means moving on, and Astrid takes more than her fair share of losses. What if she doesn't want to move on? A short story that details one way things could have gone, had the unthinkable happened just weeks after Drago's defeat in HTTYD2. Not totally tragedy, though it's not meant to have a very happy ending. -Unofficial extra information: Technically a prequel to Starting Anew, but you don't need to know anything about Starting Anew to read this, and only the final chapter hints at anything canon did not include. A bittersweet end, all in all, and a story about loss, with a strange pace. Very hard to write because of all of that. Living Defiantly (Fourth book in the Living series) - Official Summary: Book 4 of the Living series. A maniac with a grudge, a Fury with an obsession, a Skrill with a dream, a half-breed dragon who just happens to look the part, and a kingdom beneath the surface. Because things weren't crazy enough. -C: In progress works unrelated to past works, in vague order of current completeness. Truth of Legend Official Summary: A prior claim, a trail of destruction, a warning, and a dangerous mystery. A mystery that needs to be solved before it reaches Berk. But the answer might be even worse. Unofficial extra info: This one has an interesting origin story. In short, it was inspired by another person's plot fragments. Mystery and Suspense. This story is currently in my focus and should be done... soon. Unwilling Flame Official Summary: A nest, two humans and a Night Fury, the discovery of the Queen. When something goes even more wrong, Astrid is forced to deal with the consequences, and the fact that figuring out which side she's on just got a whole lot harder. Unofficial extra info: The first time I've ever written an AU of my own AU, but this was too strange, unique, and temptingly challenging to not do once the idea struck. I have no doubt this will be a very, very odd story. It's an AU that intentionally parallels Taking Up the Mantle, or at least the first chapter's main deviation from canon, and then goes sideways, slipping into its own unique story. Another Astrid-centric story in which Hiccup dies at the nest... and that's about the only big thing they have in common. I really shouldn't be starting new projects, but whatever. This one might be done in a few weeks, at this rate. (HTTYD3 rewrite with no working title as of now) - This is a low priority, and a long-term writing process. I plan to rewrite it and hopefully solve the many internal contradictions and mistakes this movie makes. Basically, I'm going to fix it in a way that makes more sense, though it won't be a light story, all in all. The plot of the movie, from what I know now, I cover within the first third of the book, to give an idea to the scope of this story. Imperfect Perception (AU) -An AU based off of the idea that the nest was destroyed before Hiccup was even born, and what comes of that change. This universe does not include any overt or direct magic, but extremely low-key supernatural elements do come into play in a couple of places. I tried to create a world in which I could convey atmosphere more directly than ever before while retaining third-person-flawed perspective, and the result is something new, a merging of story and writing technique. It will make more sense when you can see it in action. I Saw Myself (Inspired by the book Kindred, set right after HTTYD2) -How to summarize this? If you've read Kindred by Octavia Butler, you've got an idea, though I'm working more off of the feel than the exact specifics. Fifteen and Sixteen (Hobbit and HTTYD crossover). -Official Summary: Gandalf knew that Thorin's company shouldn't go with only thirteen members. So he directed them to a thief, a Hobbit who could use an adventure. But he had a backup plan. Enlisting the aid of Radagast had seemed like such a good idea at the time. What could go wrong with summoning a dragon-slayer from another world, to be the fifteenth member of Thorin's company? Apparently, everything. This story is indefinitely on hold due to plot issues, mainly avoiding the pitfalls of 'lack of butterfly effect' and 'lack of a meaningful end'. I may or may not ever hammer this into shape to continue it. Death is Lighter Than A Single Scale (AU of sorts, set long after all canon.) - Official Summary: Death of old age wasn't the Viking way, but Hiccup really didn't care. He assumed he was done, and ready to pass on to Valhalla, or somewhere at least. So when things don't go anything like he expects, he is understandably extremely confused. Reincarnation, Furies, and a lot of history he doesn't know pull him into a world that he never knew existed, one he was apparently already a part of, though he can't remember any of it now. Of course, his work isn't done. It never is, and never will be, it seems. -Unofficial extra information: This one's really crazy in premise, but it builds up slowly, with an episodical plot that is inherent in how the world I create here works. There's no good way to describe it here, so it will remain mostly mysterious for now. Mixed Messages (AU of the first movie) -Official Summary: This was possibly the strangest day ever. Forget the bruises on his shoulders and back from being slammed into a rock by a Night Fury who had limped off afterward. That was one thing. But the one-two punch of that, and his apparently very much alive mother showing up out of the blue with no explanation whatsoever? AU in which Valka returns during HTTYD1, thanks to a bad decision by Drago. That's where I started, anyway. Like most of my AUs, I couldn't stick entirely to canon. So expect the unexpected. -Unofficial extra information: This one's in a difficult place, and its future is uncertain. Toothless ran away with the plot, and he won't give it back, whereas Valka isn't making much of an impact. We'll see. Of Ravens and Dragons (WOT and HTTYD crossover. This is a difficult one, and will take a very long while). Unexpected Complications (Monster Hunter and HTTYD crossover). - Official Summary: All actions have unintended results. Nothing is free. A mystery born from these truths drives Hiccup and Toothless (along with Ruffnut and Tuffnut) far from Berk, in search of answers. What they find, however, raises far more questions. Meanwhile, a certain hunter is trying to find answers to her own set of questions... This actually has a full plot summarized and broken down to the chapter, but almost no work put in. I do intend to write it at some point, but it's got some issues that need to be addressed first. (Vigo Trilogy that has no working title as of now) -Unofficial extra Information: Holding off on this one until my skill has risen to a point where I can do it justice, the first story I ever even began to pull out of my head and put onto the screen, however briefly. (Sci-fi story that I'm not even sure should be connected to this fandom, as it might work better as an original story, no working title as of now) D: Stories that I have no solid plot for, but might do at some point. A sequel to Starting Anew, set in the immediate future A sequel to Starting Anew, set in the moderately far future A sequel to Starting Anew, set in the extremely far future Note that the above three are all different plots, and unrelated to each other except tangentially. I could do any combination of the three without breaking continuity. A sequel to Taking up the Mantle That one is unlikely, though the universe it would continue does have a few unique hooks that mean certain plot ideas that come to mind in the future may fit perfectly here, where they would be hard to justify elsewhere. 7. I hold the title of "First HTTYD / WOT crossover story published on this site". It is a short (less than 30,000 words is my definition of short here) story that is basically a prequel to a planned future work, tentatively known now as Of Ravens and Dragons. However, it needs revision, so I'm not too proud of it at the moment. It's not bad unless you're a WOT buff in which case you'll notice some OOC decisions and moments. |
