Because Harry testified at Malfoy's trial he thinks its his duty to make sure he's fine, and friendship spawns from it and maybe more. He has a bad feeling about the auror who was assigned.

Harry and the lot are back at Hogwarts for their final year, after the final battle. But Harry finds himself more ostracized than ever before, and finds an unlikely companion in Malfoy, also shunned.
