I was writing fanfics of one form or another since way before I knew there was any such thing as Fan Fiction. I've always been making up stories about my empire in Civilization or Master of Orion or filling in the blank spaces thoughtfully provided by Professor Tolkien. My current interest is in the Lord of the Rings, especially the places that we don't see like Dunland or Umbar or the lost Dwarf Kingdoms of Belegost and Nogrod. I like to take a place or event that's only tangentally related to the main events of the inspiring story and build on that, and Middle-Earth is fabulous for that. I welcome constructive criticism, though that doesn't mean I will actually take it to heart.
