Welcome to Omaha

Sitting out here in a Higgins,
Saying my final prayers.
The driver blowsa whistle,
Says the defense is in layers.
Thirty seconds to landing.

A boat next to us explodes,
Artillery opens up on the rest of us.
The ramp opens into Hell,
The beach is crowded like a bus.
Machine guns send us a greeting.

Sitting out here in the water,
It’s freezing cold.
I think of my little girl,
She’s only one year old.
I don’t feel so brave.

Where’s our tank support?
It’s been destroyed.
I’m shaking uncontrollably,
We move into the void.
It’s utter chaos.

A mine kills our commander,
We’ve got to make it to the seawall.
Death and suffering surround me,
Welcome to Omaha.
The worst beach of D-Day.
