Malicious Code Writers

If anyone writes, or knows someone who enjoys writing malicious code, slap the culprit in the back of the head for me. Thanks to them, everything I had written was destroyed early in 2014; even all my backup files were infected. Plotlines, research, reference materials, ebooks, and over five hundred pages of new work was destroyed. All my personal writing and original stuff, absolutely years worth of poetry and the notes for an entire world I was building, poof. I'm feeling down enough about all of this that I'd like to shake the programmer responsible.

Malicious code isn't wicked, it's just plain mean. I hope the writer of the code gets everything they deserve.

Much of my personality can be understood by my favorite quote: I prefer the wicked to the foolish. The wicked sometimes rest. -Alexandre Dumas. I am very patient, except when you don't use your head, even after I train you to. As those I beta for will attest, I lecture and teach as much as I correct grammar and spelling.

I am naturally fox-natured, with a wicked, dry sense of humor, though age has tempered me. I don't like to hurt people with what I consider humorous, so many sarcastic comments stay in my head. It's why I find writing Tony Stark so much fun... I'm of an age with the fictional character (though slightly younger!), and share his music preferences and snarkiness.

I fell in love with the Inuyasha series from the first episode I saw. The name shouting was annoying, but not nearly as bad as Naga's laughter in Slayers. So, as I normally did, I bought it in Japanese with English subs. Big difference. After I'd watched the first four episodes in Japanese, I never watched it in English again.

I can only guess that the sarcastically voiced Inuyasha of the English dub is what turns people off of our favorite dogboy... plus the fact that back when the Inuyasha fandom first became popular in fanfiction, in order to drive Kagome to another lover, writers made him cruel. It's become a fanfiction staple, and that's pretty sad in my book.

For those of you wondering just how different the Japanese and English versions are, this dialogue is from when they went after Yura of the Hair. Kagome has admitted she doesn't want to go back to the past, but she will anyways, even if she's scared. Inuyasha throws his suikan over her, and they return through the well and race off.

The English Dub:

Inuyasha: A bonfire.

Kagome: (whiny and scared) Where are their heads?

Inuyasha: (uncaring, rude) They're guys from the village, or their bodies anyways. Looks like their tops came clean off. (mocking) Now what's the matter? I better not hear you're scared, or you want to go home.

Kagome: (miffed, slightly insulted) Actually, I thought I would borrow these. (thinking) If we don't stop her now, even more will die.

Inuyasha: (still disdainful and mocking) You know you aren't going to hit, why bother?

Kagome: I just need practice.

Inuyasha: (snide) Practice? Don't you mean learn?

Kagome: I'll do it. I really think that I can.

Inuyasha: (thinking) Then again who knows, maybe she'll do it after all.

The Original Japanese:

Inuyasha: A bonfire.

Kagome: (shocked) Their heads are gone!

Inuyasha: (clinical... not uncaring, but so used to seeing it he has no reaction) They're fallen warriors. They must have gotten tangled in the hair strands. Such bad luck. (Suddenly realizing she's never seen this, but holding her to her promise to fight: not uncaring or mocking, just warning her.) Stop looking so depressed. And don't start whining about wanting to go home.

Kagome: I... thought I would borrow this. (thinking) We must destroy Yura quickly, or many innocent people will die.

Inuyasha: (picking on her without malice) The arrows you shoot probably won't hit their targets.

Kagome: How rude! If I practice, maybe...!

Inuyasha: (curious) Practice? Did you practice?

Kagome: (vowing) From now on! Just watch me! I'm going to improve!

Inuyasha: (thinking) Huh. This woman... she's hopeless, but I gotta admit, she's gutsy.

I found his actions in the original Japanese to be spot on for an experienced warrior going into battle with the ultimate in rookies, even the teasing. You can't let someone get hung up on the horror they just witnessed when you're heading into a worse fight.

I cannot stand the whiny little useless girl voice used in the anime for Kagome, or many of the changes made to the series by Viz, who were under the impression anime viewers were too dumb to understand Japanese concepts. (Admittedly, it was one of their first forays into popular manga.) I have the whole original manga series in Japanese tankobons and on my computer in fan scanlations. I read it more than I watch the anime.

I love the Inuyasha/Kagome pairing in canon. I very rarely write or read I/K fanfiction because most people can't come close to Takahashi-sensei's portrayal of them in the manga. Inuyasha pretty much joins his fate to Kagome's very early on in it. Much of the tension between them is Kagome's youth... she sends loads of mixed signals that he can't understand... and Inuyasha's devotion to his honor. He knows very well it's guilt for not protecting Kikyou the first time around, but he cannot abandon a promise to protect. But as he's used to not trusting people, he doesn't talk to Kagome, which hurts her.

Of course, the fact that Takahashi drew it out for over ten years for the singular purpose of having it end in the year of the dog didn't help!
