Author has written 4 stories for My Little Pony. I'm a writer of fanfics, that's all there is to say... Actually, I thought of a little more to say. I'm 22, male, can't get enough of friggin MLP: FIM. It's just a show that's too badass for words, and I was so happy to find out I wasn't the only guy who felt that way, heh heh! I enjoy reading MLP fanfics as well. Whether they're done in the style of the show, dark, sad, shipping, M-rated comedies, or... heck, even the occasional clopfic can be pretty entertaining (at least the one's that try to tell a serious romance are), I like 'em all. Below are listed some of the more famous MLP fics that I've read and my opinions on them, just for anyone whose curious to know what I thought of them. I might add to the list as I read more. Cupcakes: I feel like I should explain myself a little more with this one. Here's the thing: this fic was kinda my intro to the MLP: FIM fandom, and at the time I was only vaugely familiar with the show. I had only seen brief snippits of episodes, and was mostly into the parodies and fan-made stuff surrounding it. So when I first read this story, I didn't really know these characters all too well, so I wasn't really affected by it when bad things happened to them. I was a bit grossed out, but I wasn't emotionally scarred or anything. So basically, I wasn't as offended by it as most seemed to be. Now at that time, I was still kinda on the fence on whether or not I wanted to get into this fandom. I didn't really know what kind of guys most bronies were. When I found out that they were into the same kind of stuff I was (video games and whatnot), I decided to give it a shot. And... as it turns out, I really grew to love this show, love the fandom surrounding it, and love the characters. So looking back at Cupcakes, even though it never had the effect on me that it seemed to have most bronies, I kinda understand now why it's so infamous. After all, the characters of the show have really found a special place in my heart (even though they're not real), and to see such a beloved character go through something like that... it's pretty messed up. Still, at the end of the day, I think people need to realize that it's just a fanfic; it doesn't change anything about the show, and it shouldn't be taken too seriously. In fact, no fanfiction, even the really good ones, should be taken too seriously. At least that's what I believe. Le Petit Four: Probably one of the more famous sequals to Cupcakes, though you don't really hear about it as much as its predecessor. For those who don't know it, it's basically the same thing, but with Rarity. I have to say, I found this one significantly more disturbing. It's longer, more brutal and graphic, Pinkie Pie's much more sadistic in it, thowing in psychological torture as well as physical (making Rarity think of the last thing she said to her sister), and just much more mean-spirited. It sill didn't give me nightmares or anything, but I was significantly more affected by it. Because of it I actually kinda grew to like Rarity a little more. Sweet Apple Massacre: Uhhhhhh... let's just say that I hope the guy who wrote this one is in therapy, and if he is I wish him well. Seriously, this story is a million different kinds of WRONG! It's worse than Cupcakes by a long shot. I mean, at least Cupcakes didn't have rape in it. Rainbow Factory: This one... ruined me. This one absolutely disturbed and bothered the hell out of me. This is the one that kept me awake at night. It's not necessarily a scary story, but it's very very very harsh and bleak and cruel. Even before it was revealed what the rainbow factory was, I was bothered by it. It's filled with nasty, horrible characters that just made me gash my teeth at them. It's also very very very well written, I have to give it that. I listened to it as a dramatic reading done by that guy with the really awesome voice on youtube (can't remember his name) and he should win a friggin award for that or something. The voices he did for the characters were phenominal (that Dr. Atmosphere pony sounded like Mark Hamil's Joker in a way) and made the story all the more nasty. It's a sadistic relentless nightmare of a story that's very well written, and I will never read it again. Romance Reports: I'm just gonna come out and say right now: as of this moment, this is my favorite MLP fic of all time. I recommend it to everyone. Even if you're not into clop, I'd still say give it a chance. It's more than just mindless sex. It's a well written, emotionally enthralling romance story that actually really made me think about what it means to be a in a relationship. Honestly, how many fanfics are out there actually make you think? It's a pretty rare thing. And if you are into clop, then hoo boy, does this fic deliver! Seriously, the guy topped himself every time with his sex scenes! It blew my mind (as well as a few other things, I'll tell ya that much). Incredible story. Give it a shot. Also, it has the best Rainbow Dash portrayal in a fanfic I've seen yet! She's a total frat boy in this thing! I friggin' enjoyed the hell out of her! My Little Dashie: I'm gonna be a little controversial here for a moment: I don't love this story, I just think it's alright. It's a great concept and it's well written, but it just didn't enthrall me as much as it did others. I guess my main gripe with it is I don't think it needed to be as overwhelmingly sad and depressing as it was. I mean, if I found out Rainbow Dash was coming to live with me, I'd probably lose my shit! Even if I was the saddest sad sack on the planet, the thought that one of my favorite cartoon characters is crashing with me would send me over the moon! It'd be party time, baby! But instead, he just continues to mope, and to be honest: I started to get kind of annoyed by it. Dude, you've got friggin' Rainbow Dash living with you! Cheer the hay up! Maybe it could've got sad again at the end when she had to leave, but everything in the middle just felt like he was trying way to hard to rip out your heartstrings, and personally, he failed to rip out mine. Anyway, like I said earlier: great concept, well written, but some of the choices he made in telling it didn't work for me. Good fic, but not great, at least not in my opinion. I wouldn't even put it in my top ten. Oh, and one more thing: Rainbow Dash does NOT WATCH NASCAR! (Just a quick note: his other story: Dreaming With Ponies is better in my opinion) Decay: I'll keep this one short. I've read hundreds of MLP fics, a good fraction of them sad ones. Let me just say of the hundreds I've read... this is the only one that made me cry. Forbidden Fruit: Some Applejack/Twilight action! How rare is that? And by action, I mean they just go on an adventure together. Still, kinda rare you see those two together for any kind of story. It's written fairly well, and has some profoundly moving moments. At times it hints at a shipping, but it never goes that far. It's sequel, Unintended, which I'm currently reading, does end up shipping them, and I have to say, it's pretty freakin' awesome! Even though my favorite shipping by far is TwiDash, this was a really interesting idea, and a rare one too. Usually she gets paired with Rainbow Dash (overrated, even though there are a few stories about those two that I like) or Rarity (good, but not one of my favorite ships). I recommend checking both these stories out. They're very unique and quite good. A Fun Day: Aw jeez, aw God! Alright, let me make one thing clear: this is a terrible story! It's horrendous! I love Scootaloo to death, but... reading about her being brutally tortured to death by the Mane Six... I was fuckin' roaring with laughter the whole time I read it! I don't even know why! Maybe I was just laughing at how horrible it was, but... man, I couldn't stop laughing at it! Believe me, I felt like an asshole for it afterwords, and yes, I'm sure I'm going to hell now, but... jeez... sometimes I still chuckle just thinking about it. Ah, I need help... Study Buddies: A TwiShy shipping! Again, not very common. This one is quite an experience; it's part romance, part trippy mind-fuck. There's some great stuff in here that goes into Fluttershy's mindset; why she's so shy all the time, how she's repressing her aggression... it's fascinating stuff. On top of that, there's some great romance between her and Twilight. There's some AppleDash thrown in there too (ugh, but it's actually handled pretty well in this story) and some Rarity/OC and Pinkie/Soarin. I have to admit though, Pinkie Pie seemed a little too laid back in this story. She was actually pretty normal for the most part. But other than that, great story, and I hope the writer continues it soon, 'cause it's listed as on hiatus right now. Mothers: By far the best Rainbow Dash/Scootaloo bonding story I've read yet. Alongside all the dark and shipping and war stories I like to read, I love a good Dash/Scootaloo friendship story. I've lot's of 'em, some good, some not so good, but this one really moved me in a way that few MLP stories ever have. I would love to see it continued in some way, because honestly, this guy has tackled this particular subject better in one chapter than most have with entire hundred thousand word stories. And that song at the end... the closest I've come to manly tears since Decay. Fallout Equestria: I could go on forever about this fic, and it still wouldn't do justice to how unbelievably amazing it is. Kkat is a freaken genius! She took one of the most out there possible ideas for a MLP fic and absolutely nailed it. It's not quite perfect; there were a few areas where it dragged, not to mention one or two things that seemed kinda unneccessary (the old Dashite was pretty pointless). But the good stuff far far outweighed the bad. It was enthralling, disturbing, funny, exciting, intelligent, and deeply moving. Honestly, I never wanted this fic to end, and now that it has... I'm sad as hell. I have never loved an OC as much as I loved Littlepip. I wanted to just go into the story and hug her so damn bad at so many different times. When people ask why I got into this fandom, aside from loving the show, I'll point to this fic. It's stories like these that make Bronydom a truly incredible thing. Thank you Kkat. Thank you for giving me the experience of a lifetime. This story will stay with me forever. Past Sins: I don't think I've encountered a story yet that's had such a mixed reaction as this one. People seem to either love this one hate it passionately. I had a feeling I was going to end up in one of those groups when I first started it. But, in the end, my reaction to it was actually a great big... meh. Now, I really wanted to like this one a lot. After all, the ones who love this story consider it to be one of the greats in this fandom, and I was really excited when I sat down to read it for the first time. Sadly, I found myself greatly underwhelmed when it was over. Now, I didn't hate it. There were some things about it I liked quite a bit. I liked how dark it got in some areas. Honestly, if this were an episode of the show, it would scare the crap out of the younger audience. Of course it's written very well, better than most. And I found the overall premise quite interesting. However, there were some big things that kinda killed it for me. First off, I didn't find Nyx that fascinating a character. I really did not give a damn about her or her issues (I don't think she's a Mary Sue though, don't know how some people got that idea about her). I didn't find her relationship with Twilight all that powerful or moving, either. I know that they lived together for months, and a lot of their time together was left unwritten, but all that seemed to happen between the two was Twilight read to her at night and sent her to school. I just couldn't get emotionally invested in anything that was happening. Aside from one D'awwww moment, I didn't get teary eyed once, not even close. Not even her friendship with the Cutie Mark Crusaders felt well executed for me. Also, I thought it dragged in some areas, and a few events didn't get explained well enough and weren't given much thought (the whole thing with Princess Cadence's rebel army didn't go anywhere). To be perfectly honest, I ended up skimming the last few chapters instead of actually reading them, and from what I saw, things started to get pretty crazy towards the end. But sadly, I just... didn't... care by that point! The story failed to invest me emotionally, so I didn't give a damn what happened in the end. Now, maybe it's because I just finished reading Fallout Equestria, and that story just throughly whooped my ass so hard that anything less than it was not gonna fly for me. Maybe I should have waited longer before diving into Past Sins. But sadly, I don't think my opinion would change on a second read. Past Sins is just going to have to go down as one of my biggest disappointments. One more thing though; I really like Spell Nexus. He was a great love to hate baddie! Beating the Heat: A mature rated MLP fic that doesn't contain any clop or gore? How about that! Basically, it's like an R-rated sex comedy about the Mane six having the worst heats of their lives. The kind of heat that would leave Equestria in ruins. While not phenomenally well written, it is very funny and features some great raunchy comedy. There was no outright explicit sex in it, but the implications and raunchy humor definitely earned it the M rating. Definitely worth checking out if you're into that kind of thing. Tiny Wings: My favorite Scootalove story alongside Mothers. It was the saddest I've ever felt for Scootaloo, and it also presented the most believable relationship between her and Rainbow Dash. Even though Scootalove is probably my favorite thing to read in the whole fandom, very few writers get it down right. Some make Rainbow Dash way too affectionate and touchy-feely way too quickly, and some make her way too much of a strict disciplinarian. Scootalove works best for me when Dash is a bit unsure of how to act at first, but is slowly won over by Scootaloo until she decides to swallow her pride and give the kid a cuddle or something. That's the most satisfying way to do it in my opinion, and this story nailed it. |
